No forward assist.

Just don't start thinking you need to change out the upper for one with a forward assist. People actually do this, and I cannot understand why.

Do not get FA-envy. :)

Got my Sport for $650. Added a Vortex Strikefire and Blackhawk sling. Bought 3 30 round pmags and one 10 round for bench shooting. Could not be happier with the rifle and now I'm working on accumulating ammo.

Does anyone own the M&P 15 sport. I don't see pictures of this gun anywhere on the forum. Just put one on layaway, no forward assist ,no dust cover. Is this a gun that users avoid. Could this be another one of my impulse purchases where I should have done my home work first. Paid $799 out the door. Seemed like a good price to me. I do live in Jersey where their are no gun privs.

Ok. Thanks. I think the OP gets that other people got a deal on their M&P. I don't think this thread should go the direction of price wars of ,Oh you paid too much or oh I got it for this price.

As soon as the OP mentioned this in his thread, he is leaving himself open to feedback, regardless of if you think it's justified, or in good taste. I would recommend not trying to manipulate responses and the directions of threads if there are no forum rules being broken......kind of defeats the purpose of the first amendment.......just my .02

Its called keeping it on topic. Just my .04.

Who cares what you paid? You got one for about half what they were selling for in the "panic" early last year.

The best part is YOU GOT ONE, now shoot it like you stole it!

My 2 month old Sport is my first AR, and am impressed what a nice rifle it is. Might put some MagPul furniture on it and maybe a red dot later on.

Enjoy yours like we do ours.

Just my .02 - keep the change.

Bought my Sport for 650 bucks about four years ago and was the first AR I ever owned. From there I built a AR that I alone like. To be honest the only thing that still is a Sport is the barrel and the lower. The Sport was a starting point to build a better AR that suited me with the bells and whistles I wanted to add. As for the parts that I have from the transition, I plan on building another one at a later time.
It was a great adventure in reinventing my Sport. I learned a lot about the AR as I went along doing the work myself. And this forum as great as it is had help me with a lot of decisions and some of my choices.
So if you plan on taking the jump as I did, good luck and enjoy the choices you make. Oh yeah it is still a S&W. :)

Nice setup, can you tell me what optics and sights your using.

Thanks, I kinda like it. :D The optic is a Primary Arms 30mm red dot with an absolute co-witness straight mount, $90 shipped to my door. The iron sights are both Magpul, MBUS rear and Pro front.

Gunny, what is that hanging from the muzzle, rimfire can?

That would be cool, but no. Since I put the Troy Alpha rail on, the rifle looks longer, so I wanted to lengthen the barrels appearance as well. It's a 4.5" convex Halo 6 port linear brake, built by Darkstar-CNC. The porting is very similar to the Levang comps. I shot with it the other day and like it. The muzzle blast is focused forward, so the folks beside you aren't abused.

Too much? Hey, just finding one can be a score. Don't sweat the price anyway. When you look at all the garbage these guys put on their guns, the base price is just the tip of the iceberg.

Welcome to the rabbit hole!

I agree with Rastoff. Prices vary and will change due to political conditions. With all the talk about banning ARs in early 2013 the price of ARs more than doubled and the supply dried up.

There is an advantage to buying in a LGS. You get to actually see the gun you are buying. That is worth something. Returning a gun to an online seller isn't the easiest. Once you " accept" a new gun at your FFL that you purchased from an on line retailer there are no returns. If something is wrong with the gun you have to go through the manufacturer. However, if you buy at a LGS most will work with you.

Also, its much easier, and often entertaining, to trade for something different at your LGS. That's hard to do online. Plus, there have been many times a LGS has fixed something for me or had an extra part I've needed. So, I don't mind paying a little more at a LGS. They have overhead they have to pay for.

I got into this platform about 6 months ago when I bought a Sport. I have to say I did so kind of reluctantly. I'm kind of an old guy and the "black gun" stuff never had any appeal to me.

I *LOVE* the Sport. I've probably put 600 rounds through it and every single round (literally) has been handled flawlessly. I think S&W has done a superb job - making a high quality product at a great price. They really, IMHO, did their research well when figuring out how to target the customer.

If you're looking for a range item you made a fine decision. I'm confident you'll love it as well.

The forward assist is a silly argument.. There is a move on now to make the receivers smooth without forward assists...theres some expensive guns without them..

I like my sport very much...I've added a free floated rail.. new Ace stock..grip and I may take it apart and have it Cerakoted..

I wish they made the Sport in a Pistol....I`d jump all over that...but I`m going to build a pistol and guess what it will not have a Forward assist...nor a dust cover

I have been shooting for a little over 40 years. I cannot ever recall having to use the forward assist on any AR type rifle. The original ones did not even have the device. If a round will not chamber, my preference is to get it OUT of the firearm, not to "hammer it home." As to the dust cover, it is really not necessary for the type of shooting we do here. Unless you are going to the middle east, in which case, you will likely be provided a rifle equipped with the device, I do not see it as an essential item. There are those who will disagree, I suppose, including many "arm-chair warriors" on various other forums, but personally, I think the M&P Sport is the best deal going and, like I have said about the Model 10, the J frame, and the 1911, "everybody ought to own one." :)

You will love your sport. I have a Nikon p223 3x9x40 scope on mine and cut bullet holes regularly at 100 yards
