NO RC COLA NEEDED!!

Moon pies are still available in places like Cracker Barrel. I do miss the RC.

Some times after a big swig of RC we would drop in a dime bag of peanuts. Yes, a dime bag once was full of Planters salted peanuts.

Around here it was Dr. Pepper and a bag of Lance salted peanuts. You dont see Planters here much. RC is still around-as well as Mr. Pibb (aka) the "other" Dr. Pepper.

PS, I ate a few moon pies but never cottoned to them like I did Zingers. I dont eat Zingers anymore because the icing resembles plastic to me.

Always need RC!

Sure you are not thinking of CR?

Thanks JR. For you young guys, the ones who never knew America as a 2 lane road without interstate highways, JR's picture is what many Mom and Pop "SERVICE STATIONS" looked like out of the city limits.

A person walked out, asked how much gas you wanted, usually a bucks worth would get you 4 or 5 gallons. If you were on the road and close to empty ya got a 5 spot's worth. They asked if you wanted your oil or fluids checked and get this, they washed your windshield without being asked.

You could go in and get a loaf of bread and some lunch meat to fix for lunch as you drove. There would be candy, cigarettes and 5 cent seegars in a glass case. Free matches were always on the counter.

They could fix your tire under a lean too attached to the building and your pit stop was a small room inside or a unheated water closet outside or a two holer out back.

And if you had been good and your Dad had an extra quarter or fitty cent piece you might get a soda with a Moon Pie or peanuts. You got 8 ounces of Coke for 6 cents or 10 oz of Pepsi or 12 oz of RC. Now you see why RC was so cool for a kid, 50% more for your 6 cents or later a dime.

And I think I've shot a few marbles with JR in the dirt next to the building.

If you were broke and walked over you could scour the ditches for unbroken soda bottles and get 2 cents each for them. 5 Bottles was a big RC and if you were lucky you might find enough for the peanuts or Moon Pie.

How many of you long in the tooth pups picked up bottles for soda???

Thanks again JR, that picture brought back a flood of memories.

HUNTER- MY PLEASURE FOR SURE-- THOSE WERE THE DAYS! I turned in many a bottle for a 2 cent rebate-- or deposit, as we called it in the day. Had a good collection of marbles too!! :D
I found this while on a camping trip in Southern MD., awhile back. The photo below was the scene off the front step. :)

In my neck of the woods, there was no value on the Orange Crush. About every other kind was ok......And you'd put them in the wood case racks!!!! But .02 is what we got for bottles too.

Uh...Uh...I think I'll pass on that one too. Do they fizz like putting them in a RC or Pepsi????

I probably should have mentioned in in my other post, when I did the peanuts in the Pepsi thing with my daughter...She's 43, and she's my youngest!!!!! So that doesn't make me much of a spring chicken... I wasn't such a good father with my kids.

I was still too sick to drive my hot rod to the car get together, (Deuce coupe) so I had her drive.(Recovering from cancer treatments) We had stopped somewhere for gas, so that's when we got the refreshments. I put the peanuts in the Pepsi....

"Dad, that's another thing I never knew about you".

That was a good trip for the both of us.

I don't know if she's tried doing it that way since though. I'll have to ask her one of these times.

I don't remember on the Grapette, I haven't seen one in years or 4 or 5 decades. :(

I hope you are doing well and can now drive the Deuce coupe and enjoy life.

She probably did so she could see what it is all about.

I have to go to wally world to pick up a few things, Pepsi and nuts is now on my list....

Wuzzfuzz take care sir and prayers for complete remission.

Duane.

OH! Just in case your daughter needs more antique culture training (shock) show her this. I loved this and hated the Beatles for bringing change. You might have, just might have heard this before.

When I lived in Chattanooga as a kid...

Me and my side-kick decided the two cases of empty drink bottles on old lady Johnson's back porch was just to big of a temptation...

We boosted the two cases and made our way to Simm's Store on Dodd's Avenue...

Sitting out on the front porch of the stone, having a feast with RC.. Babe Ruths, Moon-Pies...

Mr. Simms walked out and said..Mrs. Johnson just called.. seems someone stole two cases of drink bottles.. you boys wouldn't know any thing about that.. would ya!?

Oh, no, Mr. Simms.. we don't know a thing!

He said.. "Yeah..right"..as he walked back into the store. :D

I thought everyone knew the #2 option for peanuts was Grapette soda......:D

I haven't seen Grapette for probably sixty years. MAN, that stuff was good! Much better than Nehi Grape Soda, but only in what I remember as a seven ounce bottle. Smaller than Nehi, anyway.

I'm sure many of you remember when Orange Crush was in a brown, ribbed bottle, and wasn't the garish orange color that came later in the clear bottles.

Wasn't the ingredient that gave the original Doctor Pepper its distinctive flavor prune juice? I'm pretty sure it was.

And yes, I turned in many a bottle for the two cent deposit refund.

Oh man....I had almost forgotten about RC Cola and peanuts. I grew up in northern Illinois and we had RC available back in the 50s. RC was quite popular because it was a much better value than Coca Cola....came in a real big bottle. I never really developed a taste for peanuts in my RC but I tried it a few times.

Here's that town where I picked up coke bottles (beer bottles we only got a penny for): sand streets, one blinking light at the intersection. See the old cyprus water tank? No drinkable city water, just brackish well water:)

The like is for being truthful. None of the rest of us never ever did that..... And don't ask.

CR? Do you mean Crown Royal? It is the adult version of RC. With RC you walked the ditches looking for bottles. With Crown Royal you walk the ditches looking for your car...:D

Hey Mike did you visit the gun shows in the STL area?

The convention hall is big but I always had more fun at Pacific.

You go back just a wee bit farther than I do. When I was draggin' my wagon around the alleys of Manhattan Beach the small bottles brought 3 cents & the big ones a nickel.:D

The trash there was probably more entertaining. At one time I had a better stash of Playboys than the ol' man. Actually found a Marilyn Monroe issue. Don't ya think I wish I still had THAT one. ;)

I've eaten many Moon Pies, drunk gallons of RCs and put bushels of peanuts in cokes.
Not only have I turned in many a drink bottle, I was the kid at the local Mom & Pop store who had to deal with 'em. Many an afternoon after school I went to work to find a grocery cart plumb full of loose drink bottles that had to be sorted and cased .

Ya know, I bet if they would start every session of Congress by giving everyone an RC and a Moon Pie, we'd all be alot better off. :D

Howdy,
True story. My neighbor's sister did this and choked to death and fell over dead on the spot.
Thanks
Mike

I also got 2 cents for the bottles. I bettcha there was a big ol hoop cheese on that counter in the store too. Big Toms cookie containers too! Might a been a Sinclair, Dino or Gulf sign out front. I don't remember Grapette but I do remember Grapico. Small bottle with "bumps or "pimples" on it. Good stuff.

Did they call it "racking bottles" in your home town too?
That's what it was here, and that was done out back where the hot air from the coolers blew out. In summer it was about 120 degrees.:p

If it has a tax stamp on it-it ain't moonshine. Jest sayin.........

Which is why there are still (Like that? Cute, huh!) many dry counties in the Appalachian States. To this day, folks vote down "Gubbment Likker" because they want DC to keep their nose out of it!

Thought it was about religion, didn't 'cha?;)

HEY! I'm not quite 60 and grew up scavenging pop bottles for change. You makin' me sound old or something'. I do remember the end of it, though.

BTW: I live in Ohio and can walk over to the WalMart's and buy Moon Pies and RC to this day. It's on the shelf by my favorite - Vernor's Ginger Ale.

Had not eaten a Moon Pie in over 25 yrs and couple weeks ago ran across them at local convenient mart. Decided to get one and I was hooked again. Too bad I am trying to lose some weight. Maybe I can get the diet RC to go with them.
