No revolvers in the PNW?

Here in upstate NY I see mostly Semi-Autos, but the indoor range I belong to ONLY allows shooting at standard 50 foot range. Targets cannot be placed closer ever.

So all shooters practice and compete at 50 feet.

I think it does improve your skill. I suspect the members that shoot regularly are 'good' at 50 feet a lot better than most at shorter distances.

I see some revolvers, still and the amount of 38 special ammo stocked at the local Walmart has expanded to an full length four foot shelf.

I moved to Washington state from Texas 3 years ago. Since then, I have been shooting at several ranges, and I've noticed two things that strike me as odd.

First, I've have yet to see a revolver on a range that wasn't mine. What is going on here? Even the old timers out here seem to shoot bottom feeders exclusively. And mostly plastic ones at that! I get weird looks from some of the younger folks, and one range officer commented to me this afternoon that he was "glad to see someone still shoots revolvers".

Second, I've noticed that almost no one sets their targets up at the 25 yard line anymore. Everyone blazes away at 3 or 7 yards. I grew up shooting on a range where the close range pistol targets were at 25 yards, and long range at 50.

Not sure where I'm going with this post, I guess I'm just feeling like an anachronism after today's range trip. On the plus side, I finally got my .41 Special 586 out to the range and it shoots like a dream. Seems to really like 5.5 grains of Unique under a 215gr SWC.

This thread make me feel like a weirdo!!

I shoot both types and I enjoy both. I did enjoy shooting a tighter group at 50 yds with my 1941 Lithgow Enfield than the young man next to me shooting his AR. I also hit a 2X2 ft square plate 6 out of 6 at 225 yds with my 8 3/8" 27-2. I practice at 15 yds but the target is 5".

My brother shoots better than I do.

White or red wine? Some prefer one or the other, some prefer both. So it is with semi-auto's and revolvers. The revolver does not get much respect from the millenials yet, but their time will come. I shoot both and my preference for revolvers came with age.

Well, the truth be told, I've missed a few along the way... :)

Yeah, and I got at least SOME of them over here on the right side of the state. ;)

There are a fair number of revolver guys around here in the Spokane area, though most (like me) are in the 40-60 age group...

I've recently moved to Texas from Az . NO permit needed in Az to ccw or open carry , LOVED IT !
I'm going to get my permit for Texas . I have been told by several that if you show up at the class with a semi auto , then your license is restricted to semi auto only . I am a revolver guy so I will show up with a revolver . Then my permit is good for both types , I am told .
The " tupperware " guns are definitely cheaper , makes sense why everyone owns/ shoots them .

I think they gave it to you backwards. My Texas LTC is 'Category SA' and on the back of the license it says "SA = all handguns, whether semiautomatic or not." The other category is NSA: "Only handguns that are not semiautomatic". I got mine in 2013, and I seem to remember a post since then that claimed Texas had done away with the categories, and you could shoot revolver or semi-automatic and then carry either. Better check the Texas DPS website for more information on that.

Wow, what a concept! It might even be better than what I was told by my cousin's friend's uncle's sister-in-law's internet forum.

I shoot at a local gun club where the revolver is common. The gun shows seem crowded with the black guns.

Dave, who converted the 586 for you, some pics would be nice. Seem as accurate as original caliber? Larry

i stopped going to the range here years ago,its a public range run by fish and wildlife and its now 100yds only, plus ya gotta shoot thru tubes,no fun

Do you go out to Kleber in Owen County?

From what I understand, all the public ranges are that way. You also aren't allowed to shoot handguns(or at least weren't the last time I went to one). I was there one day, and had a guy tell me that a CO ticketed him($200!) for shooting one...he was shooting a 22 while his daughter was shooting a 22 rifle in the next bay.

It's been a while since I've been to one.

Lots of revolvers here. We do have fairly liberal carry laws, so most people seem to prefer autos, either Glocks (my wife and I and most of our friends) or Kimbers. A couple of people I know carry j-frames. We tend to practice with them.

Most people carry revolvers (magnums) in the woods due to bears and moose.

Hamilton Bowen converted it for me, shortly before he stopped doing S&W barrel work. It's at least as accurate as the original factory .357 magnum chambering.

Here's a pic, there are more on the thread I posted about it a while back here on the forum: http://smith-wessonforum.com/s-w-re...-586-back-hamilton-bowen-today-pic-heavy.html

I love custom guns like this, just got a model 15 made into a .32 long PPC gun from Andy Horvath. The pics of the gun is in the Competition section in the PPC gun pics thread. Cool gun you had made using the 4" 586, a well balanced and good looking piece. Don't want to hijack this thread. Have fun, Larry

I sold all my glocks a few months ago and replaced them with Ruger Blackhawk Convertibles and Single Sixes. As a hand loader, I find it much more rewarding working up loads for revolvers. And then there's the "Ruger Only" loads. As a 68 year old shooter with failing eyesight, I shoot at 7 yds alot and not chasing shell casings all over the range is a plus. I did keep one Taurus semi-auto that is my EDC.

I'm an old fart & revolver guy. Cut my teeth on S&W & H&R top break 38 S&W calibers. The only kind us kids could afford. Most were 10 or so bucks. Wish I still had them. Gun laws were not strict then. Even took them to school to show our friends & shot them after school. Tried semi autos but never cared for them. Only have 2 now, a Luger & a Ruger. Main carry gun is a 638 with handloads. Main hunting gun is SA 44 Colt,

I don't go to indoor ranges anymore.
No reloads, lead bullets, can't pick up shells and other BS.
Been a revolver guy for some time.
Do have one plastic .45 ACP, haven't shot in 10 years I think.
Now, the Browning HP and the 1911's get shot some.
But my 38's & 44's get shot the most and while hunting I'll have a 44 SPL
on my side or maybe the S&W 500 Magnum! :)

I'm in the PNW and I shoot revolvers.

I have been bringing two young men into the shooting sports over the last several months. Both of them really enjoy shooting my M19. I sold one of them my Single Six as his first handgun. It goes perfectly with his Henry Golden Boy.

In a couple of weeks I'm adding a new wheelgun to the stable. A mid-60's Colt's Detective Special. I'm pretty excited about it.

Try shooting a 32-20 K frame... Common remark: "That sure is a sharp report for a .38"

I have a nickel plated one that is 102 years old and when people see what it is and ask how old, they "just shake their heads", particularly if they see the fired cases and realize that they are "rifle cases!!" Even more fun is to bring a Model 52 and watch their shock when rimmed empties come from what looks like a semi-auto!! Dave_n
