Hey Forum,

Had an interesting email exchange with S&W. Here is how it went:

Hi,

I was wondering if you guys had any information about whether the SD9 has been approved for sale in the state of California.
If it hasn't, do you know of a timeline?

Thank you in advance,

Chris

Hello, the SD9 does not meet the new DOJ requirements and we will not be able to sell that model in California.

Regards,

Too bad. S&W has a 10 round version. I guess something else about the gun doesn't meet requirements.
:(

Cheers,

Maybe it has a flash supressor or a bayonet lug???:D They may be afraid that after you expend your 10 rounds (assuming that you don't have 20 more mags loaded and ready to reload) that you will attach a blade and stab someone...

It's the front night sight. State gov't in California has declared that you can only use dangerous and destructive items during the day time. ;)

The lack of a magazine disconnect?

Kalifornia is such a safe place, citizens need only dial the l.a.p.d for self defense. lol. Could be the front & back strap texturing is too AGGRESSIVE.

Don't see them getting rid of the Sigma any time soon then. I don't see how it couldn't meet requirements.

I think perhaps this is the rub

Yep... It is the loaded chamber indicator requirements (no longer does just a hole in the top of the barrel hood make the grade) and the firing pin micro engraving requirement, that will keep the S&W SD9 and most other new semi-auto pistol off the handgun roster and out of Kalifornia.

A real crock full of Bovine excrement.

You know, I have never been to California, and I hear it's a beautiful place...but I cannot imagine how any gun enthusiast can stand to live there! :-(

Roots run deep. My wife and I were both born and raised here so job, family, friends all keep us here. Otherwise CA would be about the last state I would choose to live in.

What happens if you move to California from another state where there are no restrictions on handguns? Are you "supposed" to get rid of any that are not on the approved list, or can you keep what you already have, and just not be able to buy any more unless they are on the approved list?

We've been talking about maybe moving to northern California (or somewhere on the upper west coast) for the climate but I don't know if we can handle the laws there.

This. The loaded chamber indicator needs to be something like the XD has, something visible and palpable. The micro stamping will likely not ever happen as the technology is patented and not available to gun makers, IIRC.

No. You can bring in virtually anything as long as its not a listed assault weapon. For pistols that means threaded barrels generally or a magazine that does not fit into the grip. You cannot bring any over 10 round capacity magazine. You also have to pay a reg fee of 19.00 per handgun and reg with the state doj. Actually some that are moving here buy stuff not on list so they can sell it later for a premium.

Thanks for the info. Actually, most of my pistols don't have more than 10 round mags...my 1911s have 7 or 8, my M&P45c has 8, and my revolvers of course don't. The only pistol that I currently own with a higher cap mag is my SD9, which holds 16...so, I'd just have to get 10 round mags for it.

I don't know that we will move...I think the climate would be wonderful in northern California, but it's hard to think about moving away from Texas.

Not being a native , but moving here 25 years ago, cant wait to get out,the moronic politicians, 5 or whatever times the lawyers of other states, and eventually you will not be able to buy or afford to buy guns or ammo in this state, with all the problems we have the politicians still keep firearms at the top of the list, and I love these actors/movie producers who make all their money on ultra violent movies and music and then condemn firearms, what hypocrites,3 to go,love this forum. It keeps us going ,but hate the guns I miss out on.

I just hope all the Californians stay in California. I would hate to see them move to other states and pollute them with their strange ideas. You can't blame it all on the politicians in the California. Everyone knows what they are like and yet the voters elect/reelect them time after time.

Californians

Not all parts of California are inhabited by idiots. I think you'd find my part of the State alot like Texas in many ways, with many folks being of similar mindset. The Central (San Joaquin) Valley is agricultural. We are largely conservative politically, and gun-loving. However, we are badly outnumbered by the metropolitan areas. I am a fourth generation Californian, but I may well leave after retirement. Don't paint us all with the same brush. I just might like Texas.

Snowman hit the nail on the head. And it is happenens to a lot of other places/states. Highly populated urban areas can easily swing the vote to the left if they get people out to vote. If you look at a county by county map of individual states of the last presidential election you can see that states like Ohio and Pennsylvania are all red except the large cities. Now I am not saying that every Dem. is against guns but if you take a look at who the NRA says is gun friendly it tends to lean towards the GOP. Eventually California will fall apart and it will be the leader in another first. The first state in the union to become completly dependant on the fed to support them. And the millionare public servents will say "it is completly progressive to be dependant on others money. This is big city stuff that you hard working Americans don't get. Just cut us the check and will let you know when it turns out just like we planned. In the meantime keep that checkbook ready cause inflation here is ridiculous."

Well Spoken, leas327. I'm afraid the previous post got my attention in a negative way. I get a bit tired of seeing BS like that. For the record, I'll live where I want to live, and I'll believe what I want to believe. It might be very similar to what the poster believes in many ways, but regardless, those are my rights.

Was stationed in Kali at Fort Ord back in 1982, married a local gal, moved to San Jose when I mustered out of that enlistment. Lived in the Bay Area for awhile, worked for a towing company, then went into security for a few years. Moved up into the San Jouquin valley, liked it ok, but there is just too many stupid rules for this old Kansas farm boy. Between the DMV junk and gangbangers, plus the cost of living, I gave it up after about 12 years since it was apparent that I would never have any quality living out there with all my money going to the government and the landlord.
