I use the yellow colored microfiber towels from Costco - always some in my glove compartment. I use them all over including for my vehicles when detailing. They definitely absorb much better after they are used for a few minutes - but are not great at absorbing right out of the package. After a few minutes they are spectacular. More than likely it has to do with their manufacturing process that makes them that way. I do not like using paper towels in or on vehicles - yes they scratch!
When drying my cars after washing I wring them out well and they seem to absorb better and better with usage. I do NOT wash them! Most of us know that dish washing and laundry detergent removes waxes and you can never get 100% of the detergent out so I have a used towel bin in the garage I throw the old used ones in after drying. They then get used for greasy and oily jobs (oil changes, car repairs and maintenance, messy jobs around the house like plumbing, and then tossed. This way I feel they are getting used to their fullest without being contaminated for delicate usage.
