No I won't post pics.

I'm 47. Never had a cold sore until 2 years ago. When I went through my divorce. The night it got ugly it popped out. It's not on my lip but on the portion above my lip just under my nose. I can actually feel it throbbing.

When ever I am under a great deal of stress it pops out in the same spot. What do any of you use for these? Is there anything?

It now looks like a giant mosquitoe bite that hurts like a SOB.

I read that Rommel suffered from these while in North Africa. Jeeze I'm glad I ain't under that much stress...lol...

Herpes..

simplex.. the cold sore virus.. Like it's close relative zooster(Chicken Pox), it is a chronic infection. Hides in the nerves and emerges when the subject is "stressed". The only good thing I can think of that it is above the belt line rather than below..
Avoid stress and hope for a vaccine sometime in the near future!

Visit the DR. and get Veltrex, cheap meds. I hate cold sores myself. G'day to ya!

Abreva...across the counter ,its like 20+ bucks but worth it .....and I have a buddy that suffers from these and he broke down and got Valtrex...yes its a herpes medication ...but he says he "knows" when they start and he take it and it helps...They also prescribe Valtrex for shingles.

Jeez, Bruce. I dunno, but good luck to you. Sounds very unpleasant. :(

My belief is for medical issues, try a variety of solutions. I think what works for one person might not work for another. Experiment.

old time cold sore remedy

An old time cold sore remedy from an OLD pharmacist...spirits of camphor applied to cold sore with Q-Tip 2 or 3 times a day...will sting like h---, but should take care of it in 3 or 4 days...this according to an OLD pharmacy professor at number 1 pharmacy school in the U.S.A.

Bruce,

My wife and I have had the virus in our systems since we were kids growing up a thousand miles apart. No one ever gave us any remedies that worked until my current dentist (who is a shooter, a friend and intelligent) gave me scrips for Valtrex pills and Zovirax ointment. These work but are NOT a magic bullet. I make sure I have the meds on hand. Then it is critical to start the meds as soon as you feel the tingle. The meds will minimize the duration and ugliness.

FYI....the stress trigger is not necessarily mental/emotional. If you have the virus it may react to extreme cold weather or excessive sun exposure.

Best,

Campho-Phenique.
I've been using it for years, works great.

Thanks Guys;

A little better today. Now just a huge scab. Did pick up a tube of Abreva from the PX today. At least that throbbing pain has gone away and I do not pick at it!

I think I will talk to my doc and get a prescrip for those other meds. Sad part is now starting to date again. I got some fine prospects and wanted to have dinner with one tonight. Needless to say I passed for now:)

But I did tell her why. She laughed and said it would not bother her but if I felt bad about it we would do it another time.

Goes to show you this board is a friendly group who shares great knowledge on things other than S&W's.

Take Care

vitamin called L Lysine plus some aspirin to reduce fever .. yes you have one ... you'll FEEL it depressurize within the first hour

I agree, Lysine and lots of it.

I have had cold sores since a kid, finally found a 'cure' in the form of Lysine.

I usually take massive quantities when I first notice one coming on, (itching and warmness) at least 1,000 mg an hour for the first four or five hours, sometimes 2,000 mg if I feel that I didn't catch it early enough, then back off a bit to 1,000 mg every few hours. Keep this up for at least two days.

Nothing else is needed.

It really works well and prevents the formation and helps in the rapid healing of what may possibly have started.

The key is starting the regiment right away, do not wait (I have gone to the store at midnight to get the Lysine) because if it takes hold it will take much longer to rid yourself of the scurge and the Lysine will not perform as well.

Personal experience has taught me well.

From my buddies "Jarhead notes on field expedient fixes" he says take a fresh ash off the tip of a cigarette in the palm of your hand , with a drop of spit make a poultice and apply it as soon as the "hotspot" appears.

I've tried it and it worked for me, but i've only had 3 cold sores in my 48 years so I'm probably not a great test case. He , and most folks he's told about it swear by it ?

Being that you're Army it may make you grunt in your sleep or something :D

Thanks again guys. Picked up some Lysine today. Hopefully can get this monster under control before my free weekend...lol...But it's dryng up quickly.

My wife and her brothers swear by Lysine. I tell my wife that the reason I've never had one is due to clean living. She doesn't buy it.

Call your dentist he can perscribe you the valtrex i keep 4 pills on reserve just in case. Take them as perscribed they will prevent frequent outbreaks. heres a joke for you. What's the difference between love and herpes? Herpes is forever! something for all of ya'll to watch for. When the waiter pours you a refill don't let him touch the rim of your glass with the pitcher. Flu , herpes, colds, and all kinds of funky stuff. Working in the lab has made me paranoid about germs but sometimes you just have to accept that fly in your drink after all it's just more protien. Don't get me started about the bathroom and that nasty soap! Doeboy

Damned if I don't have another one today. Got sunburned bad on Friday. Had a real stressful weekend and got little sleep. One started popping out today. I started with the Lysine and Abreva immediately. Hope it works.
