I stopped by my pharmacy Monday to pick up some scripts. I saw the big signs advertising the flu shot, the shingles vaccine, and the pneumonia vaccine. Why not? I have been meaning to get all three, and figured it was as good a time as any.

That was about 4:00 Monday afternoon. By lunchtime Tuesday, I was dragging, and one of the injection sites was whelping up into a red, feverish, sore, inflamed circle. By 8:00 Tuesday night, I was having chills and fever. Had a terrible night. I guess I'm feeling some better, but I still hurt all over. Feel like I just lost a hell of a fight. I'm not bleeding from any bodily orifices, so I guess that's a plus.

I guess taking all three at once wasn't too smart. Then again, It might be just one injection that's causing the reaction.
 
Don't know where they came up with that shingles vaccine all of a sudden. Absolutely had to have the pneumonia shot and the heavy-duty flu shot (due to my emphysema), but the pharmacist kept pushing the shingles vaccine. I absolutely refused; I'm not taking something I know nothing about that had not been recommended by my doctor.

Another thing being pushed now by all doctor's offices is this "patient fusion" concept. I've refused this also: no way I want my health records online. If my credit card records can be hacked, can't health records be broken into also? No thanks.

Funny most all the doctors I or my wife and friends know recommended the shingles shot. Be advised if you get shingles and did not get the shot when you had the chance you will understand why it’s a good idea. Yes I had shingles, and as I said in a thread on here about that subject a while back “its like your skin is on fire and they are putting out the fire with ice picks." Only way I could get any sleep was taking Tylenol 3s (codeine)
 
Thank God I have been healthy most of the time in my 62 years, damn few problems. I guess it helps to stay away from doctors LOL LOL.

They make a LOT of money giving these immunizations. So they 'sold' you everything, while you were there. If they didn't give you one, they take the chance that you'll go elsewhere. It's ALL about making money.
 
My doctor told me that the shingles vaccine only has about a 50% success rate. Also, it costs around $300. He told me that IF my health insurance would pay for it, then it's work getting. He said if you have to pay the $300, it's just not worth it. My insurance did cover it, with no deductible, so I got the vaccine. It was no worse than a flu vaccination; not like the tetanus vaccine which ALWAYS hurts.
 
I saw both my parents get shingles, it is not a pretty sight. Mom was in her 80s and dad in his 90s so it can happen at any age. After seeing the pain they went through you bet I got the shot. Didn't get three at once though, you're tougher than me.
 
I've had the pneumonia, my doc tells me it's good 5 years, or something. I'll be getting flu and shingles probably the same day. CDC recommends against getting two live vaccines at the same time but flu is not live so I should be good to go.

Oh, I don't know, the military has no problem handing them out in slathers. They'll space out shots of the same stuff say, anthrax, but thet don't mind giving you a cocktail of anthrax, hepatitis, malaria, smallpox, tetanus, etc. one shot at at time one after the other. Those are special days indeed.

I've had shingles twice I don't EVER want to feel that again.

It feels like someone dumped a bucket of fireants down your shirt
 
Last week my doctor told me that he would have to give 173 patients the shingles vaccine to prevent ONE case.

With odds like that I saved my money.

I had shingles as well and wish I had taken the vaccine. It was the worst pain I ever had to deal with. After 3 nights of no sleep (even with narcotic pain killers) I had to go to a pain clinic and get an epidural injection. After the shingles cleared up, I got the shot just in case.
 
I got the shingles a couple of years before I retired. They were on the left side, on my head, down my face and on my chest.

The scariest part was that they were on my left eye lid and just below the eye. Had to go to an opthalmologist as well as my regular MD.

In addition to the pain and the concern I had about my eye, the meds they gave me made me puke.

There's something odd about seeing an old man stopping his car along the roadway and puking his guts out. At least I felt a bit self-conscious.

A few years later, the VA was offering the shingles shot and I got one "just in case." I don't ever want them again.

My VA will give you the flu and pneumonia shots together, but you'd have to come back to get your shingles shot.

I was told that the standard insurance cutoff point for the shingles vaccine is now 60 years old. Until 60, it is considered elective and costs $300 with no insurance, about $210 with insurance. Once you turn 60, the co pay is $20 or less and you can get it done at the drugstore.

I've seen the ads showing shingles victims. Since I've had chickenpox, you can be sure that I will be getting my shot the day that I turn 60.

Those rashes look very painful.

Painful doesn't describe it enough. get the shot as soon as you can, you'll be glad you did.
 
I had a comparatively light case of shingles on my face and head the first of this year. About a month ago I got the flu and shingles shots the same day and had no problems except a little redness and tenderness where the shingles vaccine was injected.

With my lungs in the shape they are, a case of flu could all too easily put me out of business. Both my primary doc and lung specialist stress the importance of the vaccine.

I damn sure don't want shingles again.

I inquired about whether I needed to have another pneumonia shot, but was told that after 65 (I'll be 77 in less than a month) I don't have to repeat that one. I may get a second opinion on that.
 
Thanks for the skinny on the shingles shot. Had never heard of such a shot. Absolutely am not going to take anything I don't know about or had not been recommended by my doctor. Sorry, but I don't live in a "They're gonna get you" world. Am more concerned with my steadily worsening emphysema, the main reason I moved to the desert.

Patient Fusion: I Googled it: seems to be an independent system of medical records and appointments. You'll garner much more by reading it than my post.

Ill bet it was the pneumonia vaccine. A couple of years back my family doc gave me that shot and it darned near felt like someone had shot me in the arm with a 22 for about a week. I get a flu shot every year and never have a reaction to it and next year I'll get the Shingles shot after I turn 60.

I've come to the conclusion that getting old really isn't much fun. Can't See Stuff, Can't Remember Stuff, and every time I see the doctor he has some new reason to poke me somewhere.
 
In 1967 before going overseas, my shot record was not up to date.:eek:

Walked in, compliments of the US Army, 3 shots in my right arm 2 shots in my left.:eek:

Rubber arms for the next few days.
Kept an eye of my shot record after that one.;)
