My Grandpa gave my mom a rifle from WW2 back in the 60's and its been in a closet ever since, anyways its a mod 98 it said 1940 on it and says 243 on the top also has nazi signs all over it. Either way first thing is 243 the caliber for the rifle or is it 8mm? it also says 7.9 on the top also the serial number is all over it, either way is there any good way to get info on these weapons, is it work restoring or firing or should i just leave it sit the way it is?

thanks

If the rifle is original (and I would assume that it is as a bring-back) it will be in 8mm Mauser. You can always take to a gunsmith and have it checked out. (You really should do this anyway if you are planning on shooting it.)
The "243" is probably a manufacturers number code that was used in Germany on their military arms. Number codes were used up until 1941 when they starting using letter codes.
243 was the code for Mauser-Werke AG, Werk Borsigwalde, Berlin-Borsigwalde, Eichborndamm

Thunderhead, Deans info. above is correct. There are several forums on the internet for WW2 rifles and Mausers, that can answer all your questions. . Try a Google search. Ed.

As stated, the 243 is the code for the factory where it was produced. I have a very fine .30-06 sporter that was made with a 243 action.

WW2 Mausers are in 7.92X57mm. Some were sent to Israel after the war and were re barreled in the late 50's to 7.62X51 NATO. These had the proper caliber designation burned into the stock to prevent accidents with the wrong ammo. Taking the rifle to a ginsmith prior to shooting ot is very good advice.
