NOW A CAT 5 HURRICANE!

Three Sons and three daughter in laws LEOs work and live in Pinellas County. Haven't heard from them. More than likely out patrolling the streets (like real cops do)
My daughter lives in Gulf Port and she lost power about 2 pm this afternoon but so far ST Pete area has had some rain and wind gust but nothing close to what the towns south of them are getting. They got lucky when it went South for landfall.

granddaughter just texted us from Estero. she had no cell reception for several hours. she related the worst might be over. the greatgrandchildren have a closed play space under the steps, they had a camp in all day. power was out several times.

The airport at Punta Gorda stopped reporting after 1554 local. At that time the wind was East at 86, gusting 123 mph.:eek::eek:

This could be the one everyone talks about for years to come! We am right in harms way and a bit more anxious than I normally get.

We've prepared as much as possible and the wind and rain are now starting to wind up. I just heard they upgraded it to a Cat 5 which is the largest hurricane I've ever dealt with. SCARY!

I am draining water from the pool to keep over flowing to a minimum, I've removed our Lanai Screen doors, (prevents flying objects and lessens pressure in the cage) and our Generac 22k NG standby generator is ready to rock. Moved everything back in the Garage in case water comes underneath and locked the garage doors up. This one is going to be a disaster!! Just have to hope for the best case scenario - as we are pretty much in the Bullseye.

No way I would live where I had to put up with that stuff.

Ex-BIL's place in Ft. Myers Beach was elevated about 4 feet above the ground level. When friends checked the place around 2:30 as the backside eyewall was about to hit, there was already 1 foot of water in the house and the car was completely submerged. They hadn't even seen the worst of the storm surge yet! He is safe up here in OH, but to say he is stressed out would be an understatement. Now they have to figure out the logistics of how to get down there to assess the damage and try to salvage anything that may be left and get the claims process started. Where to stay, as every available room any where near will already be taken by the masses of displaced folks in the same boat that were already down there.

Just part of the deal of living in Florida. Most people seem to be okay with it.

I never understood what draining the pool would accomplish. Where does all the rain that falls on the deck usually go? The same place an overflowing pool would go? Pool folks will tell you it's the stuff that myths are made of.

Have friends in Ft Myers.

I’m in Orlando.

Rain is a constant.
Wind is heavy gusts.
Seems more North East direction.
Still got power.

Every so often, Mother Nature seems to have a way of humbling us, lest we get too arrogant.

A couple of days ago, we crashed a satellite into an asteroid millions of miles from earth and -- we hope -- changed its course.

But there isn't a darned thing we can do about a hurricane...

Mass rain and most gusty winds here. Probably at least 12 or more hours of it to come. Worst than now too.

Have a friend in Cape Coral that I've not heard from since last night, and another in Sebring that I've not been able to get ahold of since this morning.

Got a good friend that moved from a house on the ICW in St. Augustine to a few acers in Palatka. They had a modular home put there. She said her yard looks like a lake a few minutes ago.

They moved off the ICW after getting 3 foot of salt water in their house a few years ago from a storm.

Northeast corner, near Jax —- rain, rain and more rain. Winds moderate but gusty. Track now seems to be moving further East. Rain from the northeast getting heavy as I type. Weather map show large red/orange areas moving toward us here - with more rain forecast for today.

I’m just West of St. Johns river on high ground so wind is our only concern. Seeing that Ian is already in Atlantic should be better as it should pick up speed away from Florida. We will see.

We live south of the Orlando area and watched the path carefully all night. The eye passed directly over us around 0130 this morning as as of 1030 is just moving over Kennedy Space Center and back out to sea where it is reforming.

Rain totals have so far been around 18+" locally and wind never exceeded 60mph except for a few brief gusts, as reported by the Orlando Int'l Airport. It's still blowing pretty hard and raining but we never lost power other than a few flickers, still have internet and phone but lost cable TV (so we can't actually hear the panic and joy in the voices of the local TV weather-guessers!). Other than some flooding in our yard and lots of small branches down, we have no damage whatsoever.

I'm guessing that Ian's next stop will be the Carolina coast...

No kidding. They're going to need those pools to flush their toilets
