There is a Pawn Shop near me that was selling 9mm and 40 S&W by the bullet during the shortage. Located in one of the poorest counties around here, the owner said his customers couldn’t afford to buy a whole box when prices were sky high. Growing up in the country, all of the country stores in the 50’s and 60’s sold cigarettes and cookies individually but selling bullets individually was a complete surprise.

When I was a Kid in Po Boy Country lots of Country Stores sold Shotgun Shells by the round.
They usually only had Shotgun Shells and 22LR.

In the 50s & 60s in Springfield, Oregon, there was a fellow in the neighborhood that had second hand store and would sell a 12 gauge shells for a nickel.
👍👍

The hardware store in the little Ohio town we lived in back in the 1960's used to sell loose rounds. The owner kept them under the counter for anyone who either couldn't afford or didn't need a full box. Kids would cash in pop bottles at the grocery store then buy a handful of 22's. Some of the old timers would buy a couple shotgun shells to get rid of some pesky critter around the house. Some of those shells must have been really old (family owned store in business since the 1920's). I remember our barber telling dad about the surprise he got when he used one of those shells on a squirrel that was tearing up his eaves trying to get into the attic. Said it "kicked like a mule" and there was a huge cloud of white smoke!

This sounds like an interesting business opportunity and I would even consider investing if American Rounds was publicly traded. However, I think there's going to have to be a few laws and regulations involving ammo sales that will have to be reviewed and modified before it's allowed to really take off.

I also wonder just how competitive their prices are...

When I was growing up, it was very common that some local stores would sell ammo by the box or by the round. Probably still done in some places and by pawn shops. Lots of people don't want or need more than it takes to load whatever firearm they have. I have never heard of an ammo vending machine.

One of the grocery stores is about 1.5 hours south of me. I will be headed there next weekend to check it out. Sounds like a fabulous idea.

We have gone full circle, when I was a youngster the gas station/grocery stores sold shotgun shells by one or three or four, whatever you could afford and it was for meat on the table. My first job was $1.25 an hour which was minimum wage and I have seen gasoline at $.19 a gallon during gas wars so we were not always able to buy a case of shotgun shells for the grand children to shoot hayfield trap.
