NOW I REMEMBER WHY I HATE WORKING WITH ALUMINUM!

Yup, also known as pot metal. . .some people will argue that all day long. Good for making Ford pickup trucks. I drive GM so don't really care what they make Fords out of. The advent of aluminum seems to be around 1936 when those German daggers and swords went from being high quality amazing pieces to being junky pot metal stuff. It kind of reminds of the glass to plastic transition we have seen in packaging food products over the past 15 years. Why go to something better when you can go to something worse.

Huh?. like all those "junk" planes, vehicles, outboard motors, car engines etc etc.
All junk.
Some plastic Polymers are better than "steel" like all the junk DuPont has made:rolleyes:

That a big +1. It's also really fun to weld.

I've heard of this exotic metal but have never had any to play with. I do weld and braze but don't do it all that much any more. I restrict my welding to steel and have not yet attempted Aluminum. In fact my oxygen tank is finally empty and I doubt I'll exchange it for a fresh one as the Acetylene by itself is hot enough for 99% of what I currently do.

Oh come on, aluminum is beautiful, look at the P-51 Mustang, Grumman Bearcat F8F,,, you my friend, aint no pilot!

I love aluminum, lots and lots of shiny gorgeous, lightweight, awesome aeroplane..

besides, all great AR's are forged aluminum,,, "pot metal" is some zinc krap???

yes, the most glorious contraptions known to mankind, are aluminum, pistons, heads, blocks, and some beautiful steel for ballast!

bicycles, wheels

Toolguy, I actually have Tap Magic in my Shop and forgot I had it! It was tucked behind the one gallon jug of WD-40 and when I went to fill up my dispenser for the WD-4o I found a few 5 ounce cans. :o As you can see, I've got a few items in there! This morning I neatened up the cabinet and so now I can see most of what is inside.

Any hints on how to keep Files from clogging up every 10 strokes? Someone told me baby powder works but I always forget to try it.

The Tap Magic you have is for everything. There is another one just for Aluminum. They are quite different. Get some that says "for Aluminum". Then you will have it all covered.

You can use chalk on the file. Get the big size sticks and scrub it on the file before you start and as you go along.

The next time I order something from Zoro or McMaster I'll get the Aluminum only Tap Magic.

I always wondered WHY aluminum requires a different lube/coolant. Can you explain why please......

Just a few more updates.:D

GM engineers spent more than 10 million hours creating the technology within the 4.3L V-6 LV1 engine.

On files and even grinder belts use soapstone. I also use rubber bricks to clean my sander belts, but don't wait till they are clogged.

I use a mister setup on my mill when machining aluminum and a lot of other things. Cools and keeps it cutter from clogging and not as much mess as flooding without an enclosure.

POWERTEC 8-1/2 in. Abrasive Cleaning Stick-71002 - The Home Depot

You can by soapstone blocks from ebay, a rub on a file or sander belt will help keep it from clogging, even helps filing steel.

When my Dad passed he left me a few Soap Stones but until now I have never had any use for them. I' shall try it next time along with Chalk as Toolguy had suggested and see how they work.

Wish I had a Mill and a Lathe! I am barley able to bring a Bench Lathe into my Workshop, however a Mill would never make it through the door way going downstairs. One day I hope my quest pays off but so far I've only found beat up old Lathes or ones that are in descent shape but priced way way up there. The time to have gotten one was about 20 - 25 years ago when all the local HS's were discontinuing their Machine Shop classes - just wasn't real interested back then. :o

Kinda reminds me of Gun Oils

Guess you have to be master machinist to detect the subtle differences in viscosity of cutting oils. Their website has a lot of words but says nothing really (or the SDS) as "original" is listed for all metals and Aluminum is also? Perhaps "cutting Fluid" I better than Cutting Oil?

I wonder what Food Grade Eco Friendly oil is? Soybean, Mineral, Peanut or Coconut (Oh thats, Frog Lube) I guess peanut as it has a higher smoke rating.

Why not Marvel Mystery Oil, is a Mystery the same as Magic?
