NRA support
I received my first shotgun (a .410) when I was 6 (1956). Had already been on bird hunts for 2 years and my dad figured it was time for my own gun. Conditional NRA life member in the early 70s, I was in college and it was discretionary spending I felt I had to divert elsewhere (my motorcycle for instance). Still hunted and shot a fair amount then all the reloading equip went into storage for years. Very involved with Boy Scouts and bought life memberships for both Eagle sons. A month ago, NRA recruitment called for the youngest, wanting to upgrade his membership. I had been fighting the flu and was sitting around feeling sorry for myself. Turned out that my son could now sponsor his old man for a reduced cost Life membership. Of course I was the one paying, but since they asked, and since I am very concerned about the enemy within, I upgraded his membership to Endowment. What the higher levels mean is that you get to display the fact that you gave more money. And while the NRA had done some things that I don't especially like, it is sort of like any relationship. You're in it, make the best of it and help steer the direction through communication and activity. As a life member I am now asking a lot of the Guard people with whom I work, if they are NRA members, and if not to strongly consider joining. When the recruiter called me, I told him that I was planning on spending a bunch of money on some more ammunition, but since the run on various calibers, I might as well just wait until supplies are replenished, and spend my money on the memberships. I could never be compared to a founding father, but if they could all pledge their lives their fortunes and their sacred honor, by God I could fork over some money to help stand this country back up to some semblance of the greatness we have had before.
I suggest to the people who are not satisfied with everything the NRA does, to NOT drop their memberships, but work towards making their voices heard and help propel this ship with the idea of helping to steer it later.
