A large part of my recovery rate was that while the investigating officer was doing his investigation, I printed out a sheet with all Manufacturers, Model numbers, and serial numbers.

Recoveries were in Texas, California, Washington for out of state and the rest were recovered in some form of a traffic violation, crashed stolen car, abandoned stolen car all here in Billings.

BPD and Sheriffs office have done a great job for me....

The only gun recovered that is still in evidence is with BATFE....the man pled guilty, but is protesting his sentence ( he didn't get enough time I guess)....so the BATF needs to hold all evidence for the appeal.

Some of my most treasured and expensive guns are still in the wind. Maybe the rest will come home soon as well.

Your preparation and readily available information directly contributed to the success rate. Well done. I wish others did so. In my experience the majority of stolen gun reports my agency took had a zero chance of recovery because the owners could not provide a serial number. In many cases they could only provide the name of the manufacturer and caliber/gauge which only provides statistics and dollar loss.

Being a stickler for records being in writing since I dealt with real property, but also being a Luddite, I have a dedicated envelope or folder for each gun that contains its bill of sale, state issued paperwork, and other relevant documentation. The gun is identified on the outside of the envelope or folder. If a gun is disposed of its envelope or folder goes into a dedicated file for transfers. All of these records are stored in my safes. I get a steady source of envelopes from all the organizations of one sort or another soliciting contributions from me so I don't have to spend any money for them which I would normally toss.

I've been a victim too (only one) but got it back a few years later when someone posted it for sale back when you could sell guns on Facebook. I immediately recognized it. I hate a damn thief!
