I can hardly wait 'til the fall nut crop hits the stores each year! Pecans, walnuts, filberts. Black walnuts will be falling soon, and I have a couple of good trees available to collect them from. I even have a couple of favorite hickory trees that have really big nuts worth cracking out because the shells aren't too thick. They go great will late fall persimmons too. Cashews (not really nuts), almonds, pistacios, bring 'em on!

My 85 year-old black walnut trees are heavy right now. Think I'll go pick some. It's a lot of work, but in the end, there's nothing finer than fresh black walnuts. They take vanilla ice cream to a whole new level of existence.

I enjoy most all and any kind of nuts. My very favorite is to take a 20oz bottle of Coke Classic, drink down about an inch or so, then fill it with two of them "two for a dollar" bags of peanuts!

Any of you yankees that have never heard of this nor tried it, are really missing out!

The Legend of the Cashew Nut
reveals why the seed is outside the fruit.​

A long time ago, in a far away forest, the seed inside the cashew fruit often wonder about the world outside. One day, the seed heard some merriment and revelry of different animals in the forest and asked, "What is the cause of all the noise outside? Oh, if I can only release myself from this dark chamber!" He couldn't do anything but listen and pray for his release.

A kind-hearted fairy, who joined the celebration heard his wish. The fairy took pity on the cashew nut and said, "You poor little thing! From now on, you will be outside this fruit so that you can enjoy the outside world" and in one gentle touch, the nut was immediately out of the fruit.

The seed was overwhelmed with the brightness and beauty of the outside world. He closed his eyes and savored the fragrance of the flowers and the gentle touch of the breeze. The seed was so excited that he wished that he would never return to the life of darkness that he used to live in. The fairy granted his wish.

The seed relished the sight of the festivity and enjoyed the world around him. However, after a few hours the revelry stopped and the animals started to retreat, hoping to take shelter. In a moment, the sky was filled with dark clouds, the wind blew hard and rain fell heavily. The heavy raindrops painfully hit his skin, the gentle breeze is now a strong gust of wind that seems to sweep him away from the fruit that used to be his shelter and the deafening thunder and lightning raised his fear even more.

The seed called the fairy and begged to return him back to his old shelter where he is safe. The fairy seems to be nowhere in sight and nobody seemed to hear his plea. Once the storm has stopped, the fairy once more appeared and saw the seed begging to be returned to his chamber.

The fairy said, "I will not return you to your chamber, I want to teach you a lesson. Be contented with what you have. Appreciate whatever God has given you." Then the fairy left.

From then on, the cashew nut can be found outside the fruit unlike all other fruits.

I love most kinds of nuts. Right out of the bag or can. But....put them in cookies, brownies, breads, etc., and I won't touch it!

How about chestnuts?

In the early 90's, I set out an American-Chinese hybrid to be an ornamental. Chestnut trees have both male and female parts, but are not self-fertile. Living in a city, I thought it was very unlikely that there would be another one within pollinating distance.

Wrong! These photos were taken in 2003.

I've also got grapes and Granny Smith apples. That year I decided not to share my produce with the squirrels so I whacked them with a pellet rifle.

Here's about ¼ of the chestnuts that I collected.

The tree is about twice as big now and is producing about four times as many nuts. Yikes!

I just let the squirrels eat 'em now. . .and they work 24/7. Last night they had a portable generator and three 1000kw mercury-vapor lights set up.

The nuts keep them away from the tomatoes. If they even look at the tomatoes, the pellet rifle comes out again.

I like these... we used to call them Brazil Nuts when I was a kid.

I like them because they're easier to manage "portion control"... pick up 3 or 4 for a snack rather than grabbing a huge hand full of some other kinds.


They grow in a really strange pod or fruit. Here's one freshly cut open.

My Dad loved black walnuts and for years every dessert Mom made had black walnuts in them. I will NOT eat anything with nuts in it, but I do like them salted out of can or bag (except Black Walnuts...never again)

I am too fond of nuts. They have a good deal of fat and calories and I used to eat a whole bunch of them at a time. I now have a few everyday since they are tasty and good for you. I know they aren't really nuts but I really like good boiled peanuts. I like cashews and Basmati rice together also. Walnuts are terrific on ice cream and pecan pie is just wonderful...I better stop now!

Did ya know that you can set a match to a sharpened Brazil nut, and it will burn like a candle?

Least favorite nuts: The mixed nuts on airplanes that they've been recycling through the onboard microwave for the last decade... (You need to choke 'em down with martinis if you actually decide to eat 'em.)

From "Best in Show" mentioned on the quirky movie thread, Harlan Pepper (played by Christopher Guest married to Jamie Lee Curtis) uttered this riff about his childhood and naming nuts:

Harlan Pepper: I used to be able to name every nut that there was. And it used to drive my mother crazy, because she used to say, "Harlan Pepper, if you don't stop naming nuts," and the joke was that we lived in Pine Nut, and I think that's what put it in my mind at that point. So she would hear me in the other room, and she'd just start yelling. I'd say, "Peanut. Hazelnut. Cashew nut. Macadamia nut." That was the one that would send her into going crazy. She'd say, "Would you stop naming nuts!" And Hubert used to be able to make the sound, he couldn't talk, but he'd go "rrrawr rrawr" and that sounded like Macadamia nut. Pine nut, which is a nut, but it's also the name of a town. Pistachio nut. Red pistachio nut. Natural, all natural white pistachio nut.

Very interesting. When I was a kid, my siblings and I were the only children I knew who called them that.

I enjoy cashews, but I can't keep them around. I tend to pig out on them.

They make BeerNuts in the town I live in. Nothing better than going into the factory store and sampling some hot ones right out of the oven. I can no longer eat the peanuts, but sure like the cashews.

I took Charlie Sherrill some BeerNuts once and now he is hooked. Also gave some to Jim Supica and he seems to enjoy them also. I take 10 pounds or so whenever I go to Talladega or to SD hunting. They make great bribes.
