I have to admit, that when I heard about a NY-1, I didn't really know anything about them. I know what a CS-1 is but a NY-1? Had no clue.
It wasn't till I read the book and found the section on model 64 NY-1 that I was intrigued.
Of the 5 models available, this one is the 2" round butt. And as per the article written by R.M.Vivas, had to be capable of firing DAO, the finish had to be frosted or matte. On the 64 models, needed the serial # to appear below the cylinder window.
So, I knew I had a legitimate model on my hands.
There was something different about this model when I saw it the first time. The bobbed hammer. Short barrel. 6 shot. 38 special, but it seemed all "business" to me. Like it had a purpose.
I am very excited to have this gun and just brought it home yesterday.

I know that by my search on this forum, a few members do have these models. (One member has quite a few).
If you have any information about these guns, other than the info found in the book, please chime in.
For example. When these guns came out, it was the first time a 3" barrel revolver would be permitted for on duty use. Then what role would the 2" play. Would it be a detective gun? Or??

And another would be, how did I end up with this one? Seems kinda far for one of these to travel.

As always I'm here to learn. If anyone has any info or would like to comment. That would be great!

And here are some pics.....

I have a 2" NY-1 also. I researched it when I got it a few years ago and don't remember all of the details. (Anyone feel free to jump in and correct me.) They were 2", 3", or 4", RB, HB, with bobbed hammers. As I recall the serial numbers (s/n) were acid etched below the window, or laser marked. The s/n on the butt of the grip was always stamped.

They were authorized by the NYPD for off-duty carry, but within a few years that was rescinded. Smith & Wesson offered to buy them back from officers if they wanted to sell them. The rest of the new ones were sold to the public, I don't know if the trade-ins were.

I got mine a few years ago and it appears to be in the same condition as yours. It came in the box, with the original wood grips, never carried, and appeared to only have been fired at the factory, so it was probably one sold to the public. Of all the S&W revolvers I own, this one seems to have the shortest trigger stroke before firing. My s/n starts with BDT.

I believe the guns traded back were shortlived NY-1 J-frame Model 60's, and not the later Model 64's. NYPD Model 60 NY-1: serial numbers of returned guns

The New York City Police Department acquired approximately 4,000 of the Smith & Wesson Model 60 NY-1 revolvers between 1987 and 1989. When the guns were withdrawn from service the Department returned unsold revolvers in Equipment Bureau inventory to Smith & Wesson.

Smith & Wesson reconfigured the guns to conventional SA/DA configuration and released them into commercial channels. Some of them might have been re-barreled to 3 inch but that is unconfirmed. The serial numbers listed below are for unsold guns in New York City Police Department Equipment Bureau that were returned to Smith & Wesson. The total number of serial numbers listed is 1,232. The actual number of returned guns may have been slightly higher but these are the serial numbers I could find records for.

Until someone more knowledgeable on NYPD wheelguns and NY-1's chimes in (RM Vivas, RichCapeCod, BigBoku, etc), allow me to offer my congratulations on adding that piece to your collection! 2" K-frames always seem to be somewhat of a rarity as far as K-frames go, let alone NY-1 models.

Thanks to the benevolence of forum member ViperMD I was able to add an NY-1 Model 64 to my collection a little while back, in the standard 4" barrel. It's a gem to say the least! I'd imagine you could potentially get some info on who had it last with a freedom of information act request to the NYPD with its serial number. (Assuming it was an NYPD gun and not a production overrun sold through standard distribution channels.) The last time I was at Rodman's Neck they were able to look this one up.

There are few former NYPD officers on here, hopefully one or two will chime in. I got my 3” thanks to one introducing me to the then owner of it. I have the Jinks letter that has some of the info you’re interested in. I can look it up when I get home this evening.

Congrats on a wonderful revolver, the action on mine is smoooth, the gun is very accurate too.

How did you come across your snub?

My LGS sent me cell phone pictures of it. They thought that I would be interested in it. I am very fortunate that they give me dibs (sometimes) on some nice guns that are turned in on consignment. So, I don't have any of the owners previous information, or how it came here.

The action on it is impressive!

The snub 64’s weren’t around that long. They were somewhat popular since you could use the same speedloaders for it as the ones for your duty gun.

I just bought an NYPD GPNY. I put a stock spurred hammer in it just to give it the single action capability. Nice you can do that easily with the Rugers. Can’t do that as easily with the Smith.

The NYPD NY1 Model 64 DAO Revolvers were issued from 1987 to 1993.

The Equipment Section Stocked all the authorized variants of the model 64 which were, 4" SB, 4" RB, 3"RB and 2" RB (Off Duty).

The guns came factory direct from S&W wearing checkered Magna Walnut grips with the S&W Medallion but most officers switched them out for Pachmayr or similar rubber grips.

NYPD service weapons are authorized for Plainclothes and Uniform use, assignment does not dictate service weapon choice as everyone starts out in the bag. Service Weapons are also authorized for Off Duty use.

The NYPD had five variations over the run from 1987 to 1993 when the Department switched over to semi automatics. All NYPD Model 64 DAOS are stamped NY-1 on the Yoke cutout. The most common is the 4" Square Butt with approx 2,469 made the other production numbers are as follows 932 4" round butt, 516 3" Round Butt and 478 of the 2" Round butt.

Early guns did not have the serial number on the left side of the frame under the cylinder, later guns had the serial number on the Butt, frame and yoke cut out. My 64-3 NY-1 came from the NYPD Equipment section and has an AWT prefix, it is a early gun Matte finish with the serial number on Butt only, MY model 64 2" RB which is a later gun (1993) is a frosted finish serial number on butt, yoke cutout and frame below the cylinder (earlier models had dot matrix).

The 2” RB was not very popular due to its size and weight with most preferring a J frame or Ruger SPNY.

Most of the 2” 64 revolvers were acquired by officers when the NY1 Model 60’s we’re deauthorized and S&W offered to exchange them for the 2” NY1 64 pro gratis.

Thank you! I just re-read the first link . I don't think I have anymore questions. The information there makes mine a laser etched post 90'. Gun. It does have the two serial #'s. On the butt and below the window frame. (Matching)

Just speechless right now. And glad that I have additional information .

Thank you.

What a great addition to your collection Lou. As said that gun is all business. I'm usually not a fan of Pachs but they look at home on that gun. The 2" bull barrel is impressive too. It's just too cool that your revolver made it from New York to your safe in LA. Congrats buddy!

I can't wait to shoot it. I'm a big fan of DAO and the Pachs will have to do.
Hey, would this be considered a new York reload?[emoji2]

I also have a question on the holster that came with it and am hoping that LEO's here, or anyone with knowledge on holsters, might be able to say if the holster i got with it is period correct . Or would it have been leather.
I know this is a longshot, but this holster has a pocket in front that I don't know what it's for. And wonder if anyone knows? Seems to fit the gun fine.
