Moved to Washington almost 20 years ago and have never done it: Visit the San Juans. Going in October=staying in Friday Harbor. Any tips: Museums, things to do, dining?

...when you said visit the San Juans...I thought you meant our San Juan Mountains here in Colorado...

I have never been myself (Vancouver Island and the Olympics is the closest I've got), but from friends who are San Juans fans, I get the impression that you definitely want to get out on the water. My friends take their own kayaks, but there are apparently quite a few rental places and tour operators in and around Friday Harbor who offer everything from a civilized afternoon of paddling to chasing orcas across the sound :)

You can likely find all the detailed info online these days. Of course the weather plays a big part, but as a fellow PNWer, I'm sure that comes as no surprise. October on the coast can be anything from lovely to murderous, but trends toward the former.

I was stationed at Whidbey Island back in 1976-1978 . If you make it there , it's beautiful . There is a member that lives there , maybe he will chime in . That whole area is great . You're not far from Vancouver B.C. , try to make it there . The cleanest city I've ever been to , and the Queens Gardens are something to see .

Been to Victoria (Buchard Gardens, etc), all over Whidbey, Anacortes. All through the Olympics. Love Port Angeles and the Salish Rez.

Been to the San Juans in Colorado many times. Stayed at Mesa Verde, Durango, Ouray, etc. Got a flat up on Wolf Creek Pass in a snowstorm coming back from elk hunting.
