I don't know the size of your town and department, and how you folks interact with your police, but I have the non-emergency business line to my local PD in my phone, and I'd be making a call to find out what that was all about.

My first thought is that it wasn't a LEO, but a scout for a burglary crew pretending to be a LEO looking for potential targets.
I think we have a winner here.

I can't believe it was really a LEO either. If it was someone is certainly a lame brain to think thats fine to do.
If that happened here, I would go to the city managers house. Knock on the door and ask whoever answered if they had any KY jelly in the house.
It would be worth it to hear the laughter at the next city council meeting.

First thing I woulda done is follow up with a phone call to the city/local PD to investigate why the visit, or in the alternative to report suspicious activity. Still seems like a good idea . . .
A call to the department will get a pretty quick answer if it's legit, I would think.
I wouldn't open the door before I had that answer.

Very interesting....but we need more context. Were they in uniform, if not did they produce ID, did they roll up in a marked unit or not, what led your spouse to conclude they were police? The additional information will help set the situation before we jump to the conclusion that it truly was the police engaging in intrusive behavior......if the story is to be told, furnish the coloring narrative. Or are we to assume all these identifying factors and more were present, and for brevity you omitted the detail......just curious.

I also live in a small town east of KC and I wouldn't think that is something that would happen in MO. California or NY maybe.
Which is why I never answer the door to unknown and unexpected visitors.

Unless this "cop" was in uniform I agree, AND I'd call the on-duty watch commander to see what's going on.

FWIW, it's not that hard to obtain a police uniform, or something that could fool a casual observer into thinking it's a police uniform. A marked car would be harder to imitate, though. But I've seen plenty of uniformed officers driving around in unmarked cars.
Not saying this was the case, as I wasn't there. Just throwing out possibilities. Agree with everyone who said to contact the PD to confirm, one way or the other.
Call, Call, Call. Report as suspicious activity. Ask for special patrol attention to the entire area. The survey "team" will probably be back in the future.
Update, Please!!
I did call the non emergency line last night, they checked and had no calls or other activity in the area during the time frame. My wife is pretty non attentive to detail, so getting any thing resembling good information from her is a chore. She did give a description of the individual and car (not very good) to the police, and I told her to keep the door locked and a shotgun in hand should she have to answer the door again.
