I recently purchased a pre Mod 10 snubby. The finish is shot but the price was right. I was in a hurry and should have checked it out better. Anyway if you work the action very slowly it won't carry up on all chambers. There are some other issues. Some other idiot watched too much TV and looks like they wrist flipped it closed every time they looked at it. Now the ejector rod does not line up with the bore and the recess cut for the extractor star/ratchet is hammered on the recoil shield.
Question 1. Is it possible for gunk in the action to build up and combined with wear and abuse prevent proper carry up?
Q2. The ejector rod alignment is off making me think the crane is bent. There is no indication that it contacts the frame off square but it sure looks off kilter. How hard is it to align the crane?
Q3. The cylinder has some wobble, not endshake. I've heard that there is a tool to cure this. It looks like a tubing cutter with a dull cutting wheel. Almost like knurling. Any one here heard of this?
Q4. Should I just find a 'smith in the B'ham area and turn this project over?

TIA Brian

A1. Yes, sometimes. Clean the innards with brake cleaner or the like, and see if it helps.
A2. If the crane is bent, it shows at the crane-frame interface. I suspect you have a bent ejector rod. Either is relatively easy to fix if you know what you're doing and you have the right tools.
A3. That tool is for adjusting endshake (rather than using shims). Some wobble is OK. Making it less, if it needs it, means either peening and recutting the cylinder stop hole, installing a thicker stop, or fitting a thicker hand, depending on what's wrong.
A4. If this is a project gun where you want to understand how to fix these things, buy a copy of Kuhnhausen's book and have at it. For the least trouble and most expense, find a good gunsmith.
