A little fruit taste is ok, I like that wedge of orange that usually comes with Blue Moon in bars, the lime with my Corona. Plenty of "pure" beer still around. Some of the new stuff is good. Young people are looking for something different, and breweries want their money. They figure - probably correctly - that they already have the product to get our money for our remaining days. If we want to keep all beer "pure", we have to buy enough of it that way. Even in Germany, they are mixing beer with everything, wine, tea, lemonade, you name it. Just like we need to pay for as much quality and product at S&W that we want. Truth is, we are no longer the demographic that marketing departments are looking for in their future plans.

I like beer. Generally if it's cold, I'll drink it.
Actually, that's not true. I've had some warm German beer and it was pretty good.
I like beer like I like my cigars. No extra flavors added.
I don't like infused cigars and I'm not too fond of infused beers.

I spent a month in Germany back in 2000. When I got back home, my neighbor-who consumes beer like a river runs its coarse-royally chewed me out just because I didnt try any while I was there. I DID try Apfelsaft, some Red Wine (which I hated) 1 shot of Jagermeister (which I thought was like drinking bad tasting black ink and tasted horrible) and a wee bit of Cognac (which I did like).

Not a fan of much anything with added flavor, be it beer, hard liquor, coffee or tea. I drink mostly Shiner Premium and Shiner Bohemian Black Lager. The black lager is better at room temp than it is cold.

Of course, free beer is free beer.

Now flavored Teas I am, but not Coffees. Anything else as a matter of fact too.

Beer is for sissies. I drink warm gin neat from a dirty glass with a hair in it. How many man points for that? ;) & Shooting hot rodded magnums make you more of a man too.

Pffft! Beer AND warm gin, neat from a dirty glass with a hair in it are BOTH for sissies. I drink hot rotgut corn liquor using a rusty copper cup that cuts my lips as I sip. Not that I sip at all. Nope, great, chugging quaffs of the stuff for me! Slainte!! That's gotta be worth MORE man points, right? Please? Guys?

If you want an adult orange juice there is the Screwdriver. I like big beers, packed with flavor and calories. These days I only have beer a couple of times a week, but I'm on a three day roll this week. Bud Light is not in the lineup, even with orange in it.

Prefer most stouts and oatmeal style beers. Just tried recentyl one called Moose Drool. Pretty good, about between a oatmeal and a brown ale. Have to agree with previous comments on any "light" beer.

You know the old joke about light beer and a canoe? Then you'll know how I feel.

I was awaiting for them all to start singing Bier Hier while hitting their Bier Steins on the table. Ah well, I guess steins damage more easily these days since many of those too, are sadly, also made in china.

the steins I have would do more damage to the table than the stein. the glass is almost a half inch thick and NOT made in China

Neither are the ones I have. The Red Baron wouldnt allow that :-)) And yup, I have a Red Baron stein-1st edition LTD edition.

Brewer's Friend - Homebrew Beer Recipes, Calculators, and ForumI'll park this here for those who might want a crash course in the untold world of beer.

Those who'd call anything not black as sin a girlly beer probably should lay your porter's along side a Belgian tripel and compare.

The first thing to look at is OG or SG (Original gravity / starting gravity)
This figure indicates how much sugar is in the wort before the yeast has its way with it. More sugar, more potential alcohol. Yeast selection fine tunes this a bit.
A Belgian tripel starts out 1.080 - 1.095. This is a big beer. this was my first home brewed beer .... I save this beer for the end of hard days.

An English Porter, there shouldn'd really be any other kind, goes between 1.045 - 1.070. It seems a bit less strict in this dimension.
While a much darker brew, it's not "bigger" by any means.
The lower gravity examples are largely in line with session ales.

Dissection of the two types reveals that the base malts are fairly similar.
be it called pilsner, 2 row, 6 row or maris otter .... these are all just some kind of malted barley.

Color and a large portion of flavor comes from the special malts ... same as the base malts, only toasted.

Belgians tend to use things ranging from lightly toasted grain in the 15L to 40L range .. kinda like a golden slice of toast.
Porters use 60L - 120L .... like toast of scorched earth, spitefully made with the finest napalm.

Those who might like to take a crack at homebrewing might find BIAB methods to be a good starting point.
