Ok...so I was a trigger guard snob...

I admit, that from the beginning, I hated the looks of the "hook" trigger guard on 3rd generations. When Smith came out with the "round" guards, it changed the looks of their pistols entirely, and for the better. My issue isn't with the hook itself, but the way the guard gets smaller toward the front, before it makes the turn up.

I felt this way until recently, when I found a really good deal on a square guard 5904. After feeling the trigger, and finally shooting it, i'm ready to take back everything I ever said about the hook / square guard pistols. I would snap up a deal on a hook pistol as quick as a round one now.

Any others ready to admit they feel or felt the same way?

I don't care for the looks of the squared trigger guards and have no use for them. I've seen a few Glocks that the owners have rounded off the trigger guards, and they look much cleaner. I guess they're fine for those who like them, but I prefer round.

I prefer the rounded but I wouldn't automatically turn down the hooked version if it was a pistol I really wanted.

I'm the opposite it seems. I kind of like the way the 5906 looks with the square guard. I turned down several deals until I found the one I was looking for.

I'm firmly on the side of the rounded trigger guards.

Every now and then I find myself looking at a nice example of a 2nd or 3rd gen, but then I have to walk away because I just can't warm up to the square trigger guard. I don't think they would *feel* different, I long ago got over keeping the weak hand forefinger on the front of the trigger guard, but they just don't look right !

Personally I love the look of a good square trigger guard and I miss it on the third gens like on the 1006 and the walther P99 which has gone to a rounded one as of the past 6 years

as it gives the gun a distinct, more the business look plus my father always rests his finger infront of the trigger guard so he might as well have a proper place to put it without it slipping off under recoil.

as a matter of fact that was one of the things he liked about the dencedants of his steel framed model 39, on that carry version of it and the larger one with the double stack mag, the 659 I think.

I like the square trigger guard. I bought my 5906 in 1989 (still have it) partly because of the way it looked and the improved control that finger grip provides. I would like all semi-autos to have the squared off guard with the finger grip. I guess that's why there are so many different designs available, everyone has their own preferences.

I had a 4506 with the hooked trigger, and own a 5906 now with a rounded trigger.

The hooked trigger makes holster selection harder than a quest out of Indiana Jones.Appearance wise I prefer adjustable sight models with rounded triggers slightly more than square, but I wont complain on appearance value. Its the holsters that break the deal with blocky trigger guard guns.

Unfortunately one almost has to hire an antiquities dealer to find a holster that fits the square trigger guard model weapons.When I had my 4506 that square trigger ruined a lot of great holster possibilities, the ONLY holster I could find that fit was a Sig P220 IWB suede holster. Everything else was too small on account of the trigger guard.Its why when I got rid of the 4506 I swore to never own a 3rd gen with a square trigger again.

There's probably a leather square trigger guard belt holster sitting in a temple pedestal in ancient Egypt somewhere , right next to the Ark of the Covenant and Jimmy Hoffa's tomb.

Don Hume makes most of their holster models for the square trigger guard models. I just received the JIT Slide holster for my 5906 last week. Good holster for a great price. I wouldn't be surprised if Ray at Lobo Gun Leather would make his holsters for the square guns too.

As far as holsters go, if you're willing to use kydex, a little heat will normally transform a round guard holster to a square one.

I make my own, so the holster issue does not affect me.

The hooked or squared off trigger guards was an "in" thing among IPSC shooters in the 60s and 70s, many thought grasping it with the trigger finger of the weak hand made for a better grip.

I'm an equal opportunity trigger guard guy. I like them both and own both. And I wouldn't turn away any good deal on either one. Someday my future 1006 could have either one and I would be very happy either way.

I prefer the square trigger guard...just like the feel of it. This does not mean I don't like the round guard on my new 4516...just a preference. I need a 5906 to add to the collection...and I am waiting on a square trigger guard with the adjustable sights...I just love the look of this pistol. Blew my Christmas money on the 4516...and I can just see coming across the 5906 I want and have no cash.

Made me smile to myself when I saw this thread. I have always been firmly in the round trigger guard camp. I walk away when I see a nice 3rd generation Smith & Wesson with a square trigger guard for sale. I have no logical reason for this, other than personal preference, and I thought I was the only person that would pay any attention until I saw this thread.

To me, the square guard on a S&W doesn't look right, so i prefer round. On the Beretta 92FS, the squared looks right, and the new round one on the 92A1 looks wrong. Go figure.

I'll have to admit, I didn't like the squared trigger guard either, primarily because of the looks. Then I bought a Beretta 84F Cheeta. and it affords such a great cross over double hand grip that I have learned to really like it.

But, I don't think I would like it on any of the 39 Series. I have a 639 on the way, and it is the earlier rounded guard, too.

Iv had square trigger guard S&Ws and still have some by other makers, but all in all i do Prefer round trigger guards my self.
