Okay, I'm confused - J Frame vs. K Frame, etc.

Thanks for the good info!

Just a quick thank you to everyone for the good information. I think, after digesting this, that it will still be a little slow going in being able to identify them on my own but I believe that I am much closer than I was a day or two ago. :)

In technical terms:
J= itty-bitty. hard to hold. not a target gun.
K= nice toter. big enough to hold on to. good shooters.
L= K frame after steroid therapy
N= fat daddy
X= shoulda had a buttstock, forend, and/or wheels. may have possibilities as an indirect fire weapon.

Not an expert, but I seem to remember J frames are 5-shot which I have absoluely no use for. Long live the 6-shot Colt Detective Special!

lol that was easily put and easy to understand, well it was for me anyways :)

the rule of thumb...the later the letter is in the alphabet, the larger the frame.

Not true - the early "M" frame is smaller than the K and L frames.

That's why I said rule of thumb...it's not exact.

But like with anything else it is easier to figure out a general guideline, and then just take note an exception or two.

I have a suggestion for a homework assignment, Bob. Go to your local gun store this week and say, "I'd like one J frame, please." Take it home, study, fondle, shoot, and thoroughly familiarize yourself with it. Next week, go back and say, "I'd like one K frame, please." Repeat until you get through the X frame, then start over. You'll be able to idenify them in hardly any time at all!

Expand your arsenal. A five shot snubbie is a wonderful weapon. :)
