While shooting my M&P 15-22 today, I had a .22LR round malfunction. From what I can tell, the cartridge went “pop” instead of “bang” and it blew the extractor off the bolt. The extractor spring is still there, but I can't tell if anything else is missing. To my novice eye, the firearm appears to be in good shape otherwise.

So I guess I'll be contacting S&W to see what my next step is. Is this a repair that needs to go back to S&W? From a safety perspective, I can see them wanting it back just to do a quick check.

On a side note, if I need to return it for repairs, can someone give me some pointers about shipping it? I no longer have the original box, so I’m wondering what to use.

I have not heard of this before and S&W will not sell you the parts you need to fix it so you must ship the gun back, sorry.

To avoid transfer issues, see if they will accept only the upper for service.

There is No Transfer issues sending guns in for Repair.... Only issue would be on return if they happened to replace the lower..

Sending into S&W is pretty easy... plus yer gun gets a Once over from Them....

And Correct they wont just send yer replacement parts they will want to see WHY it happened

I sent my M&P back to Smith last month for current spec update and it was completely pain free. They will email you a FedEx label. Box your gun up and take it to FedEx. No big deal. My gun was fixed and on its way back in only 8 days. Smith even upgraded all my old mags to the newer version for free.

Hopefully it is a quick turn around. I deploy at the end of the month and I'm worried that the holidays will gum things up.

Try separating the upper from the lower that way the box can be smaller.

This was a very common problem when the 15-22 first came out. That is why the newer guns have the blue springs. I had the problem, sent it back to a&w and had it back in 2 weeks. Just strip the gun down of any accessories you may have before sending back.

How old was this Rifle, how many Rounds before the part failed?

My FFL guy tells everyone, "Always keep the box the weapon comes in".

This is a good reason why. As suggested, I'd remove any and all accessories cuz ya never know.

One member got his box back from S$W, but the weapon had fallen out and no one noticed it, but him!!

I try like heck to hoard all my boxes but some get ruined over the years.

If the OP goes to a UPS store, I'd bet they have some sort of container that would be satisfactory.

ya try UPS or fedex Stores... i bet they can get ya something... Also try Moving Boxes... ya can cut em down ta fit yer needs... be sure gun is safe and secure...

Yeah, that's what I ended up doing...don't like it, but it should work.

Geez...I'm still waiting for S&W to send me an RMA. I understand it's a busy time of year for most companies, and that they are busy anyway, but it's been two weeks since I originally contacted them about the problem. Yes, numerous emails and even a phone call. Guess I know I won't get my 15-22 back before I deploy...

Ugh...second time out to the range with my 15-22 since I've been back from my deployment. Noticed the extractor was missing. Probably been missing since the last trip to the range. Still shoot fine, so it doesn't seem to have an affect. Just annoying....

I don't know that this one blew out. However, it is missing. Waiting to see what S&W says...

Seems like it is striking something when the bolt is coming back to battery ?

It almost sounds to me like the barrel got twisted just a tiny little bit. Have you ever tried to or did remove your flash hider? That will cause all kinds of issues with the bolt seating properly. From there it's just a whole bunch of issues. Just something to look at.
