Old Gun Oil Collection

Welcome to the forum. Thanks for sharing. Cool collection and display. They all look to be in great condition. How did you accumulate so many examples? I have a few random cans that I've picked up at estate sales and such, but usually in much worse condition. I like the different fonts, names, marketing slogans, and art work used years ago.

I remember having a lot of those in years gone by. The Browning oil especially brings back memories of my dad - he was a real Browning fan (A-5s) and I guess assumed they had the best oil, too. We always had that around.

I've picked them up here and there mainly through auctions. I always look for the best examples. I think most of mine are still sealed and full. Some have been upgraded through the years for better examples.

I also clean them all when I get them, some have dirt and oil gunk caked on. Just like degreasing and cleaning an old gun with a little elbow grease they can come out looking shiny and nice!

I agree about the logos/Fonts etc. Definitely tells a history.

Very interesting...I have a few of those hanging about. Since we're here about oil, here's a mystery oil can I've had for years, don't know where it came from, but for some reason think it had to do with firearms or at least the military.
Anybody recognize this?

Will try to remember to look them up.

The first picture is an oiler out of my collection. Have always been told that these are machine gun oiler, but who knows?

The second picture is as near to the one you show as I could find. Are there any markings on it?

The third picture is of one of the two books that I have on oilers.

I'm seeing a lot of references that this may be a German WW2 MG34/42 Machine gun oiler.

The one in your first picture is identical to the ones that came in with some of the surplus Yugo Mauser and SKS rifles back in the late 90's and early 2000's. Every crate had accessories packed in with the guns, slings, cleaning gear and sometimes ammo pouches. The guns were cheap enough then that a crate was pretty affordable for a shop and an attention getter on the floor or at gunshows. I still have a few of these left (along with an assortment of Russian, Chinese and other oilers from the same era of cheap surplus guns). One of these days I should dig them all out just to see what I have. Probably more of a collection than I thought tucked away in boxes and drawers in the gun room.....................

Welcome to the Forum from southcentral PA. You obviously have assembled your collection with great care.

I think I have mostly used only two kinds of gun oil in my life. Back when I was a little boy, my dad introduced me to GI surplus gun oil. That was inexpensive, readily available and worked pretty well. That is what I used until Break Free came out.

I'm seeing a lot of references that this may be a German WW2 MG34/42 Machine gun oiler.

Further investigation reveals that one of its uses is as part of a WWII Squad Cleaning kit for the Colt 1911. These are exactly identical to the one I have, with the rest of the kit.

Not oil related but I use very similar container to hold priming powder for my flintlock. I'm sure it was originally an oil container.

I think I have an unopened can of "Outers" brand oil that was in my grandfather's gun stuff box...he's been gone for almost 60 years.

Whoops - I went and checked and it's not unopened and even has a little dent. The Gunslick grease is unopened though. If you'd like any of this for your collection though, let me know and you can have them, and I'll send to you.
