Old School Calipers

I am curious. I have several calipers, and yes, even one is digital. Boy it's easy on the old eyes. However, My favorite is still the old slide rule type. The kind without digital or dials. I seem to have misplaced mine and was glad to have found another on amazon for under $15 bucks. No frills. Always accurate .

Anyone else use one of these old style calipers?

My old one is somewhere around the house.:D

I have a few Mauser made artifacts. But the calipers are the only one with the "Mauser Banner" on.:D

For those folks that are going to chime in "what if the battery dies"?

My coworkers were always borrowing my $10 Centech digital (with auto shutoff feature) because they kept leaving the company supplied Mitutoyo on... and it didn't shut itself off. I's plenthy accurate for +/- .001 measurements.

My reloading bench has a drawer for batteries. ;)

No good without a picture!

Bronco89: Is this what you're talking about? Vernier scale calipers I bought when I first started reloading around 1967. I prefer my 6" Starrett calipers that I found in a pawnshop for $25.

I have one just like it from my dad's shop!

Between the wars, Mauser made all sorts of non-gun items, such as measuring instruments and adding machines. They even made a three-wheel automobile.

A Picture of My "Vintage" Calipers

From the title you might think I was trying to sell these on the evil bay, since it has the "Vintage" word in it.

Since this is a thread with a long life, I dug these out of the Gerstner and took a few photos.

Here they are.

Have a blessed day,

Leon

OK - I'll admit to being a Tool Snob, but make mine a Starrett Dial Caliper! I also like their brand of Mic's but will admit the Brown & Sharp is about as good. While I do own a Mitutoyo brand as well, the Starrett's are my all time Fav.

I found a one inch Starrett mic (.0001) for $20 and 6 inch Etalon dial caliper at the same pawn shop for $30. if the area you live in has a lot of machine shops one of the first places to go to get mics and calipers is the pawn shop. it seems like when there are layoffs some of the tools end up in the pawn shop. they were also routinely inspected to make sure they were up to spec.
