On hating steak fries

For the few here that grew up in NYC or Brooklyn and used to frequent Coney Island, WE KNOW how good the Nathan's French Fries really are!! Coney Island (Brooklyn NY) was and is still the home of the very first Nathan's. It was located by the Beach and Playland.

YOU GUYS should get a kick out of this........

There used to be shooting gallery's right there in Playland. They were Winchester or Remington pumps and shot 22 shorts. Shooting at moving steel ducks were the way they determined if you won a stuffed animal prize. Imagine that-real guns and real ammo right in NYC..... no one ever got shot and no background checks required prior to shooting the gun.

Sorry if this is considered a thread hi-jack, but anytime I think of Nathan's french fries, Coney Island is the next thought that pops into my head. :o

I bought some grape seed oil because someone said it was good for seasoning cast iron. Yesterday I microwaved a potato for a few minutes. Poured a scant amount of grape seed oil in the pan a got it hotter than I would with other oils. The potato came out crispy brown and cooked without burning. It was also a lot less greasy than vegetable oil. I haven’t researched grape oil for the health benefits, but most doctors say if it tastes good, spit it out.

As long as they are made with unfrozen Idaho potatoes they are all just fine. Otherwise they are all flavorless.

For you salt on fries addicts, try black pepper when fries are right out of the basket. Pepper is better.:)

Their fries aren't what they once were. I'd say about average now. Of course, McDonald's as a whole has fallen off. And with their prices approaching the upper end of the fast food range, might as well take a step up and go to a local "boutique" burger place. If they're not careful, others are going to catch up, and they won't be the apex predator of the fast food market.
everything I'm reading these days says that MickeyD's has already been dethroned by Chick-Fil-A.
YMMV...

I detest the little skinny fries that a hamburger chain here has. Same for Steak and Shake fries. You really need something like chop sticks or tweezers to pick them up and eat them, especially if you like to dip them in catsup.
And you invariably end up with a bunch of short broken off ones in the bottom of the dish.

I suppose that also means you don't like shoestring potatoes?
Personally I like them better than most potato chips.
But to each his own.

I like fried potatoes just about any way I can get them.

McDonalds, Wendys, Arbys, Steak N Shake, White Castle, Jack in the Box, Red Robin, hash browns, or just plain old fried taters & onions.

Some are better than others, but I'm with Will Rodgers, I like 'em all....

Steak fries, those thick many shaped potatoes offered in too many restaurants, are an abomination. No consistency exists, some too mushy, some too over fried and occasionally a few just right.

The traditional french fries are what any decent restaurant should serve---long, a quarter inch thick and no more.

Steak fries are but a cheap way to serve a fried potato.

Cardiologists need not comment. :)

don't we have any better to talk about ?

I like Po-taters....

....about any shape and size as long as they are cooked right for what they are. Good fries are hard to find but we have a few places that still have good'uns. I like salt, but not a lot of other seasoning on them. One traditional ice/cream sandwich shop has a great menu and when you order fries, you get FRIES. Besides regular fries, steak fries and baked are my favorites. Boiled small ones are good. Butter, sour cream, salt and pepper.....Yum. Considering that like butter, salt and sour cream on my baked taters, my cardiologist would probably have a cow.

What I get tired of is that SO MANY places have fries as their main side, but they are hardly ever any good and not worth the calories.

No way. Salt only on fries, a little pepper is ok, but most of the time, if they put any pepper on them, it's too much.

I like all fried potatoes pretty much, but my favorites are the fresh cut fries like they sell at carnivals and fairs. Greasy? Hell yes. We used to go to a place that the burgers were OK at, but the fries were fantastic. Floppy and dark tan, with just the right amount of salt on them. Luckily for me, I'm fat, but have no sugar or heart issues at almost 68.

I can't say much for McDonald's anymore. The fries aren't nearly as good as they used to be, the buns are different, and I don't care about anything else on the menu other than quarter pounders and fries. Salt is all that goes on fries, if they have mayo, cheese, ketchup, or like my dad ate them, with mustard on them (and everything else) they are garbage and if I still had dogs, they would be given to them.

Just
eat potato pancakes slathered with sour cream or apple sauce.

Can you explain your potato pancakes please?
My mom used to make what we called potato pancakes , I loved them !
They were pretty heavy , you’d only eat a couple at a meal I vaguely remember that they had a very light dusting of flour or something on then similar to what you may find on English muffin
My mom had a brain injury caused by stroke so she doesn’t remember .
I’ve tried googling the recipe but am referred to ladke which I don’t think is the same

They pre-cooked the fries ahead-of-time and placed them in the racks. When a customer ordered, they took down the appropriate amount and threw them in the frier for under a minute. They claimed the double-cooking was the secret. It had the added benefit of quick service even for big orders. BTW, Belgians resent the term french fries, claiming they were invented in Brussels.

This! A couple of places do this near me. Not only does it work well for french fries, but also onion rings.
