Eeeek! A drone!!!:D

Not yet... I need to add GPS to it. Currently it is only able to hold a 0 attitude, so I can tell it to just hover around. If I add GPS it can actually hold a position and altitude very precisely, or fly waypoints I send to it.

Other fun is FPV, a camera gives a live feed, so it is like riding in the 'cockpit' :D

Was this a kit or did you build it yourself? I'd like to have one of these, if a kit where did you get it?

Initially it started taking the gyroscopes out of Nintendo Wii controllers and lots of soldering. But eventually a whole industry grew around it.

So yes you can build your own or buy whole kits. getfpv.com is where my parts came from, its a company based in Florida.
They offer you RTF / ready to fly kits, so you will receive a quadcopter ready to go.
I am using a flight controller from openpilot.com, a open source community based project with an awesome support forum and great software to change settings. Other controllers like MultiWii are less entry friendly

The initial cost really depend on how much you want to do on your own. Remotes can get really expensive unless you take the challenge and buy a Turnigy 9x which is a cheap one, but it comes with many bugs. The community took the challenge, hacked the remote and wrote new software for it. So if you do those steps you will have a remote for $80 with the functionality of a remote in the price range of $1000.

Besides the copter you will require batteries which range about $10-$70 depending on size and model, charging station will run you around $50.

And then of course you will need propellers, many of them :D

the CC3D controller from opencopter offers you basic stabilization, so if you release the controls the copter goes into a hover but won't hold position.
Now for $30 more you can get their Revolution controller which is able to handle altitude and GPS holds. With their software you could build a drone which will follow waypoints or you can use it as a safety net if you lose control. You can always tell the quadcopter to return home, hold position etc.

Other possibilites are FPV, so the pilot wears goggles and flies the copter like he is sitting in it.

Realy cool

I hope you'r not dressing it up in a cats furr ;)

No wonder the neighbor want speak to me! I shot one of those things down last week.

There are people which have flown up to altitudes of 16000feet, some flying wings can stay in the air for 3hours.

As multi rotors are as efficient as those flying wings I can get like 15-20 minutes flying time out of one battery.

My right neighbor is a retired Marine, so I guess my quadcopter scares him more then me walking around with an Ar15 or 1911 :D

I just fly in the street for quick tests, but I avoid flying over populated areas where I can do massive damage or even hurt somebody.

My flying skills are not good enough and many of the parts are still kinda beta so you never know when they fail

Uh oh...I can smell a new hobby for me coming soon!

You guys should invest in the GoPro Hero3 with Wifi, so you can watch your flight on your smartphone or tablet/laptop.

Its a good idea unfortunately wifi only goes like 300y , that's a little bit short for future projects.

Actually all he would need to do is get the "wifi bacpac" for the Hero 2. I was able to get mine for $50.

Good price! I will eventually have a 5.8ghz video down link , that should get me actually into the couple mile range

I would love to be able to fly one of those things but my hand eye coordination for that type of stuff SUCKS! Several years ago the local R/C club had an event, donation and chance to fly a plane with a member.

After loosing sight and control of it for the 4th time, the guy asked if I wanted my donation back!

Careful with that camera! The NSA is going to be on your doorstep soon lol.

Good thing that I am moving soon :D

Regular flying and RC flying are really cool hobbies, but I can't afford more than one expensive hobby. When I'm not shooting I play chess. That's pretty cheap.

They are awesome hobbies but yes very very money hungry :(

It is training training training, believe me I crashed plenty time :D My biggest fear is a fly away... That's why the copter will send its telemetry back so in case of I could always track it... But it would be 4 lbs of spinning propellers falling out of the sky
