Open carried the past 2 days

I'm telling you I'm not going to go harass him simply for OCing. Watch him to see if he's a threat, yes. Shoot him as suggested above without him exhibiting threatening behavior, NO.

I never said OCing would not attract attention, I'm saying it's just not an instant problem with an all LE, if carried in an appropriate setting.

"A civil suit isn't going to do a dead fellow much good........."

I don't think I made much of a stretch to get to my statement.

Only time I open carried was while traveling through Virginia. I was wearing a tanktop, a short sleeved button down shirt as a cover garment and my snubby in an owb on my right hip. It was warm out so I took off my cover garment and when I stopped to gas up my truck I forgot to put it back on. While my truck was filling up I went in to use the restroom. After I got back to my truck I realized I was walking around with my snubby hanging out. The world didn't end, I wasn't hit over the head and had my gun stolen and nobody called the cops. I figured with my long hair, brown skin, tattoos, silver tomahawk earring on my left ear and arrowhead and bead necklace, nobody noticed my snubby.

I happen to OC almost everywhere I go, and have been doing so now for nearly a year.

I'm rarely one to dictate to others on how to exercise their liberty Here are my own personal preferences on OC, for what it's worth:

1) I personally only feel comfortable OCing with a holster that has at least a thumb break retention, and that is a pancake style that loops securely to a wide belt. While losing the firearm would be an exceedingly rare event, the stakes of such a rare event are exceedingly high.
2) Situational awareness for me is a number one priority.
3) I consider myself a representative of not only myself and my family, but also of ALL GUN OWNERS whenever I OC. Whether it should be like this or not, the general public will form opinions on all of us by the actions/behavior of one of us who happens to be OCing a firearm. As such, I make sure I behave in a professional manner in all my interactions with others, especially if confronted by those who might disagree with OC or are anti-rights inclined. Education is key.
4) I've found that most people just don't even notice the big Model 58 on my hip, and the ones that do usually look and say nothing. Of the few occasions that someone says something, it is almost always honest curiosity that is expressed, and they are glad to learn the carry laws in my state (PA).

Just my own take on OC.

If it's legal where you're at and you're a responsible person, more power to you.

Having said that, I'm trying to wrap my head around open carring the smallest J-frame made. I mean, if you're going to strap on some iron out in the open for all the world to see, why limit yourself to 5 shots out of a short barrel on a gun designed specifically for concealed carry? It sort of defeats the whole purpose of that gun.

Who knew Native Americans invented the first camo!

S&W45Colt I live in metropolitan Atlanta, GA. Around here every county has a sheriff office, a police department, school resource officers that are not part of county police, every little municipality has their own police department. There are several colleges here, each with it's own public safety department. We have GSP, FBI, DHS, federal wildlife, GA Dept. of Natural Resources, USPS Postal Inspectors, district attorney investigators, and a ton or more of civilians legally carrying firearms. That does not include the criminal element illegally carrying firearms, or Justin Bieber who is currently house hunting here.

That is A LOT of firearms out in the general public at any given time. Why draw attention to yourself? I do not see the need to do so, but anybody that does want to should feel free to do so. I never said I thought LEO's were looking to shoot someone open carrying, it would look bad on a resume. An individual puts himself at risk as I feel that person is inviting conversation or confrontation.

I regularly see some young men open carrying handguns in north GA. People from out of town tend to be bothered by this, and call 911. A LEO will arrive and speak to them. Why the shops fail to post a "no weapons" sign is beyond me, but the managers have not done so. I have seen dozens of customers exit the grocery store, leaving behind several hundred dollars worth of groceries they intended to purchase, as they were frightened.

Not a comment on all LEO's, but a few are not wrapped very tight. They may not fail the selection process, or may fail and pay their own way through a POST academy. Then you have a problem.

As i stated earlier it is simply for easy on and off to and from work, also the 642 is the only handgun i own at the moment, i went through a rough financial situation and had to sell most of my guns :( but i do plan to buy a pocket .380 in the next few weeks, that is if the s&w 686 will quit calling my name ;)

ColbyBruce, I live about an hour north west of Atlanta in the floyd/bartow area you may know the area. It's a fairly rural area. I rarely venture into Atlanta as i hate the aweful traffic and theres really nothing there that interest me. On the times i have been into Atlanta i have to say it is like a different world from out here.

Am glad you can open carry, I can here, too. A plus to it is in case for some reason your CC shows in some way.

I mostly conceal in urban settings and save OC for when I am out in the mountains. When I do OC I like to use a holster with some kind of built-in retention so the handgun doesn't fly out of the holster unexpectedly when four wheeling, atving and such.

My sister went to Shorter College and my F-I-L's family was from Rome and Chattanooga, TN. That is totally different from here.

Fair enough, I won't deny there are a percentage of anti-gun, ego maniac LE's looking to be a problem. I took your comment as a generalization, my apologies if I was wrong. Have a good weekend, no hard feelings here, we just disagreed, we'll probably agree on the next three issues.

No hard feelings here either, but you have to take Justin Bieber!! That is ALL Atlanta needs!

^ Glad he's not looking for a country setting around here and that's another reason for me not to venture into Atlanta bahaha

I've said this before but I don't have a problem with open carry so much as with the actions of some open carriers.

Most of the people that I see open carrying are doing whatever it is that they're doing they just happen to have a gun while they're doing it. It's the Yo-Yos that do things like walk into Starbucks with an AR 15 on the back that I have a problem with.

Several years ago there was an idiot named Donald Ortega riding around downtown Colorado Springs on a bicycle with a shotgun strapped to his back supposedly for self defense. He even showed up at a couple of City Council meeting with it. The third time he did it the city banned open carry in all city owned buildings. Idiots like that give all of us a bad name.

On the other hand James Sorensen was doing nothing more than walking down a public sidewalk with a legally open carried handgun when he was accosted and arrested by the CSPD. His partner video taped the entire incident and he (Mr. Sorensen) ended up suing the city and winning.

Colorado man awarded $23,000 for wrongful arrest after open carrying in a city park - YouTube

I've heard the arguments about the bad guys shooting the open carrier first but how many times has that actually happened?

I do remember one news story that made the rounds a few years ago about a wannabe robber who walked right past an open carrier with out realizing it while robbing a store and got shot for his trouble.
If open carry works for you fine, I'm not particularly interested but if that's your thing go for it.
