There is no data to suggest that criminals avoid those who are openly armed because if they don't commit the crime, then how would anybody know they considered the victim and moved on? Is there some criminal forum on the web I don't know about?

Yes, there are surveys of convicted felons.

The below also addresses your assertion that a carjacker would not avoid a car when he sees the driver is armed.

"Fact: 60% of convicted felons admitted that they avoided committing crimes when they knew the victim was armed. 40% of convicted felons admitted that they avoided committing crimes when they thought the victim might be armed."

Gun Facts PDF pg. 21. Source: Armed and Considered Dangerous: A Survey of Felons and their Firearms. James Wright and Peter Rossi. The survey was paid for by the U.S. Department of Justice. (Professor Rossi was a former President of the American Sociological Association.) The researchers interviewed 1,874 imprisoned felons in ten states.
