I wish open carry was allowed in Florida. I think as it should be the right of anybody to carry a gun without any government control, there should be no laws restricting you on how you have to carry it. What exactly is the reason to make OC illegal? Because somebody could see a gun? So it is better that everybody has to conceal the gun like a criminal?

wrong - like Rmag said, in PA you can open carry (and I mean loaded) w/o an LTCF anywhere except Philly. An LTCF permits you to concealed carry and have a loaded firearm in your vehicle. There are the usual exceptions (schools, federal bldgs, etc)
I either OC or CC depending on the weather and what I am wearing. I do agree that OC'ing in Philly has its risks but not because of any legal reason. Google Mark Fiorino (AKA Viper)

My state does have open carry, but I don't do it in public. If I ever do need to draw or use the weapon, I personally want the element of surprise on my side. Any advantage you have can be the one that saves your life by enabling you to get the first shot off.
The only time I OC is if I'm camping or fishing, or in the woods, for comfort, or so I could carry a larger gun than what I normally CC in my pocket.
I respect those who feel the need to OC, especially if it's common in your area.

I live in a state where you don't need the government's permission to open carry. That's a good enough reason to me to do so, if one so chooses.
It's a good idea to post a link to current state law regarding firearms. Since these laws vary from state to state, it's nice to actually read the statute on the government site. Might even quote the section if it's known.

I live in San Antonio Texas. I have had a CHL for years and carry on a daily basis. I'd like to see an open carry statute pass even though I don't think I would carry openly too often.
Frankly in a large metropolitan area, it is going to be more hassle than it is worth because of the commotion it will cause. There is always some wanna be tough guy who is going to run his mouth about wanting to whip your *** if you weren't carrying.
On the other hand, in rural areas of Texas, I have seen more than one guy get out of his truck, forget to put his jacket on, walk into the convenience store and if anyone says anything it is to kid the guy about forgetting his covering garment.
The reason I would like to see open carry is so that I don't have to keep my jacket or vest on in my vehicle if I am carrying a larger gun (just slip it on while exiting the vehicle), I would be able to slip my covering garment off in a restaurant without breaking the law (ie sitting in a booth where no one is going to notice), when I'm out in the more rural areas where people tend to be more gun friendly, I could open carry without getting hassled. More importantly after a while I think an open carry statute in Texas where a lot of folks do carry and probably would open carry would make the idea of carrying firearms a bit more socially acceptable not that a lot of folks in Texas are really anti-gun.
A draw back I do see however is that carrying a gun could turn into wearing a gun as jewelry particularly down this way. I'm not sure we invented the BBQ gun but Texans sure seem to like them.

I personnelly feel that Open carry has its good points and bad, 1 yes you look like a hard target, 2 you draw speculation from anyone who feels threatend, and believe me there out there. If you open carry be ready to have managment of some places request you leave or have LEO ask you to leave.

The only reason I would like OC to be legal at every state is the same reason I wish the Helmet Law was written.
I ride motorcycles and 99.9% of the time I prefer to wear my helmet.
But time to time I need to ride my bike down the street in my neighborhood where there is no traffic at all and speed limit is 25mph.
In those occasions I wish I could ride that short distance without my helmet and still feel I am not doing anything illegal.
Same with the OC.
Probably 95% of the time it will not be my choice. But my method to carry is OWB and in a warm summer day I'd love to be able to take off my jacket without the fear of breaking a law.

To me it is simple. There is a 1 percent chance you will discourage a criminal who sees you are armed. There is a 100 percent chance you will make someone nervous. Just remember there are action that many of us think should be illegal but are protected by the 1st amendment. I do not think OC should be illegal. I do think OC is a bad idea.
Earlier today I saw someone coming out of a local grocery store OC, unusual here, and w/i 10 minutes the police showed up cruising the parking lot. I'm guessing they were looking for the OC guy even though it is legal here. I mind my own business so did not ask the officer what was up.
I OC out in the boonies when hunting, berry picking or just walking.

What town in Kansas was that? If the facts are exactly as you state, the cops are morons and the DA is an even bigger moron if he did anything but refuse to file charges and give the chief of police a beatdown over it.

I always carry concealed, believe in "Don't ask, Don't. Tell" . Nobody needs to know what I carry and when.
As for OC, I do that when it is appropriate to do so. I"ll OC when I'm hunting or at my cabin or if I walk down the back road to a local farm to do some plinking with the owner
When I'm in the city or other suburban area my weapon is covered. Now if for some reason it needs to be exposed such as having to take off my jacket for whatever reason, I'm not going to worry about it but I'm not going to flaunt it either.

OC has it's place. I like it for yard work for instance. It sits OWB and doesn't bother me when moving, squatting, etc. and I have quick access in case of an two- or four legged attack.
I don't mind when I see other people OC in public, if they have a good belt/holster combo and act properly.
What I don't like to see is people that act all over the place with saggy pants and a nylon holster clipped on to their pants.

As you can see RR, there's a divergence of opinion on this subject. I don't OC, but it's legal here, if you're so inclined. What irks me, not just OC, any subject, is when a proponent says he's going to "educate" me. The height of arrogance. Who are you? what are your qualifications? What make you an expert, worthy of spreading knowledge? I'll decide when I want or need my education upgraded. Sorry, off point, but it does get under my toga.

It would be legal for me to go out in public wearing football pads and a kilt, but that would neither be a good idea nor "educational" for the public in general. I'll do that in the privacy of my apartment, while practicing with my Uzbek nose tuba.
