Opinions for Altamont Grips on N Frame?

Does anyone have any feedback or reviews for altamont grips? They look very nice and are affordable compared to other companies.

I'm looking for a nice set of combat grips or similar with checkering for my 625.

You might do a search on this; it's a fairly regular topic.

People say current quality and fit are much better than they used to be.
My experience with several pairs some years ago wasn't good.

The ones they make for smith N frames are too skinny for me but I did buy their version of coke bottle grips and I love them. They fit like a glove and I didn’t have to do any fitting myself . The only thing I changed was the color so I stained them darker and now I love them .

Bought a pair of Altamont cokes about a year ago- fit was loose and screw retainer wouldn’t stay in. For $80+ keep your money IMO.

What makes them affordable is the use of laminated wood. Their laminated wood is also "stabilized" ( air pumped out of the wood and resin sucked back in ) This pretty much turns the wood into plastic. There is no wood stain or top coat of any kind used. You can do some sanding and simply polish the modified area to match the rest of the panel. I favor the "super walnut". I have seen examples that look a lot like Arizona Ironwood.. Altamont does a nice job of sculpting the grip panels. The finger groove styles will melt into your hands.

I do find fault with the fitment however. I don't understand how craftsmen located in Thailand know the S&W grip frame dimensions better than Altamont. I have been able to fix most of the fitment problems with sand paper and polish as mentioned above.

These are my new Altamont grips. It made my S&W 586-7 seven shooter a very classy weapon...

I have Altamonts for my J, K/L and N frame revolvers, in various styles and wood types. I have had no issues with their fit, in my hand or on my guns. I've shot them on my .44 mag. and my .22 LR with no discomfort or complaint.

I have bought Altamonts before. Do not have any in use at the present. My 25-15 came new (to me) with them from the factory. Older S&W genuine stocks feel much better to ME. We are all different though. Bob

I own 2 pairs of Altamont Grips, one on my S&W PPK/S, the other on my Taurus Judge Magnum.

I have been very pleased with both and wouldn't hesitate to buy more.

I like my altamonts too or they would not be on my guns. I just wish they would do a better fitting job on grips for S&W revolvers. It was a forgone conclusion that the comparison photos I posted would not be well received here. hahahaha

I have a few sets and have no complaints.

Arquebus357's point about sanding is pretty interesting, as I do have a set of Altamont boot grips I wouldn't mind modifying.

I do have a couple of set of the Jaruwan grips, and frankly the fitment has not been nearly as good and the quality is obviously a step down, so I think it's interesting how many folks prefer them on this site.

I've had a couple pairs of their N frame magna size. The bonded ivory ones proved to be incompatible with a Tyler T grip (screwing down tight cracked the grips rather easily). They shipped me Rosewoods that I thought were excellent for the money, though I replaced them with period correct S&W diamond magnas.

I was all set to order their J frame "Classic Panel" for a new gun I picked up, but I fell for some two-tone G10 grips that were priced right and match my gun. Guess that review will have to wait.

I believe those came from Penguin Orchid shop . Yes they fit well but I find them overly fat for my liking. The, not as well fitting, Altamonts feel much better and have found a home on that particular modified model 64.

Actually, you can have them for $10 to cover shipping.

For me, Altamonts are the way to go. I have three sets, 2 for rb K/L frame and one for a N frame. I bought one pair of the K/L grips directly from Altamont, the others I purchased off of this forum. The set that came on the N frame are beautiful; it was a used gun and apparently the previous owner removed the grips and lost the two pins that stabilize the panels. I sent an e-mail to Altamont and they sent me a replacement set of pins at no cost.

+1 on the too skinny....so I did the quick and dirty mo fat trick. Works surprisingly well. Also 'fatted' my PC m60 the same way...
