Anyone out there currently own one or fired one? I figure those two finger grips would have to go except for carry. How's the action job and recoil? Prices seem very reasonable at around $900. Also, would you consider the 627 8 shot .357 to be a better alternative for CC and HD? Thanks

Product: Model 657

I have the 627 and 629 versions of these guns and love them both and I think I will get the 657 version to complete the set. Very nice guns, fit and finish are excellent and they aren't bad to shoot. I replaced the stock grips with round butt Hogue rubber grips. Can't go wrong with any of the 3, whatever caliber you prefer. Terry

I love the PC snubbies. Though, I don't own any. I do own a 629 3" PC gun. I guess that is close enough for a snubby.
I've lusted after the 627 and 651 PC guns, too.

I wish I'd never peeked at the link. Now I want one!!!

I would rather have the 627, first. .357 ammo is readily available locally whereas if you ask for .41 in the lgs they don't know what you are talking about.

Also, locally there aren't really any large dangerous animals like bear to worry about.

I could download the 627 with .38spl for my wife to shoot at the range. A snubbie .41 would be too much for her.

If I had the 627 already then I'd be looking hard at this one next.

Like you said, though, grips would have to be improved.

A 3" barrel is a snubnose:)

I have the 627 PC and it's a lot of fun in a little package. Go for the .41 Mag if you reload. Though it would seem to be the way to go about it is to buy the 627, then 629, then the 657.

I love the looks of those PC snubbies. I also love everything .41 Rem Mag. I just got back from a hike carrying my new (to me) 657 MG loaded with 175gr Silver Tips.

It seems more places are carrying .41 Mag ammo these days. It also seems like a lot of them sell out quickly. Regardless, reloading is still your best option. You can work up a pussycat load no problem if you need it.

I can't stop looking at the new 657 Night Guard myself.

I love my 4" 57 but it's so darn hard to find ammo for it. Even on the web. Let me change that to "affordable ammo."

I know what you mean. DoubleTap is the only consistent source I've found. I like the 180gr Barnes load.

Thanks for the replies. Do you think that maybe the Model 629 (.44mag) may be a better alternative to the .41 mag. I can use .44 special ammo also, correct? .44 mag ammo seems to cost a little less than .41 mag ammo. Thanks

I would get either the 357 or 44 because of ammo price. If you reload then get either of the three. I reload for my 657 3 inch but always look at prices of ammo at the shops. Found some ammo at one shop and they were selling Winchester 41 mag of some type for 45 per 20. I almost died. I load mine with a lead bullet and a good amoint of 2400. It gets everyone attention at the indoor range.

627 PC it is

Thanks for the responses. I decided to go with the 627 8 shot .357. I think it makes the most sense for practice and carrying a gun I know I will shoot better than the other larger magnums. The extra 2 rounds are nice to have also.

I love my 629-6 and the ammo will be much easier to find than .41 Mag.

I really like my 627. Can shoot 357 all day with no problems. Shooting 38 & even 38+P+ is like shooting a 22 with it. Little heavy for my wife. When I moved up from the 686 L-Frame I thought there would be a big jump in size, but the 627 is great. With a nice grip it fits my hand perfectly. You would make a good choice with the 627. Ammo in the 38 & 357 is around most all the time. Best of luck.

I think the 627 would be the best choice for an all-around. I have the 629PC 2 5/8" and have had a lot of fun with it in the past few months. I've not seen the 627 version yet but if I do I might just have to grab it......even though I have a bunch of 357s already and don't really need another one.

S&W PC UDR 627,657 and 629

I have all three plus one extra 627 UDR Bloodwork gun that I now use as my work gun also put a set of Pachmayer Compacts on it to fit my hand.Small wooden grips just don't cut it. They shoot very well and workmanship is good. I just need to pick up three 8 shot speed loaders.

I also owned a 686 and bought the 627 without holding it. Not a whole lot bigger but definitely easier to shoot multiple cylinders of .357 without getting sore.

Blasphemy!

Try the Performance Center N Frame grips from S&W for $50 or a set of Nill grips. For me, this gun doesn't kick enough to warrant rubber grips. Check out the 8 shot speed loaders from 5 Star.

Unfortunately .44 Special ammo is higher than .44 mag.

As for the .41, the best grouping ammo I have found for my gun is Winchester 240-gr. Platinum Tip. I know that's a bit heavy for a .41, but I love the small groups. Now if I can only find it . . .
