Opinions on the Promag Shield magazine?

Not to be that guy that says "search", but if you use the forum search just "promag", you'll find quite a lot of threads. Too many to link here. Some are even specific to the Shield. While a few have had good luck with them, most have experienced issues.

I'm on the "experienced issues" list.

Their Rifle mags aren't bad, but I've never heard a good word about their Pistol mags (for any brand of pistol).

I have a few of the 10rd mags for my 4506 that work great but I wouldn't buy anymore. The ones I got for my Sig P6 wouldn't latch in the magwell. I also got a couple of the 30rd P226 mags that the mag spring quit after the 2nd use.

They are cheap for a reason and I don't know how they are still in business. I just save my money for Mecgars.

Not directed at the original poster - but I am always amazed at guys buying cheap magazines, when originals are plentiful and reasonably priced. The only exceptions would be for rare, out of production guns where you can't find the mags.
The magazine is one of the, if not the, crucial part of the gun. Friends don't let friends buy cheap mags ! With the internet, you can almost always find the correct mag.

Because people want to save a dollar! You know. ..why should I pay $30 when this is $10. Obviously seller A is overcharging. .....until they go to use it and find out the $10 was a waste and now have to buy another. So now we go from $30 to $40

ProMag = spontaneous disassembly. To be fair I purchased two during the magazine shortage and after adding new base plates and working on the flanges that hold the base plate on, they worked fine. Not worth the effort if S&W mags are available.

Well, for the shield, it was the only ten rounder I saw. Haven't used it yet, so bummed it's probably lame.

Are there any other ten rounders for the shield? I'm wanting a large capacity for the house.

I bought a pair for my FS during the great mag shortage of 2013. Ten rounders were especially hard to find then.

I have plenty of S&W mags now so the Promags sit in a box. I probably paid $25 each back then.

Don'r even get me started on the Mini 14 mags!!

This thread is timely for me. I picked up a Shield just last week and already thinking I need another couple magazines for it. The replies here certainly convinced me not to even think of bothering with the promag. Thanks OP.

Quality of Pro Mags seems to be hit and miss. I don't have any for the Shield, but I do have a couple for my Bersa Thunder and Hi-Point 995TS. The ones I have just work. That doesn't seem to be true for everyone, though. Seems like it may just be a roll of the dice as to whether you get good ones or bad ones.

The Pro Mags (10 round only - I haven't tried the 15 rounders which have VERY bad reviews) for the Hi-Point seem to be better quality than the factory mags. I know that's not saying much since magazines tend to be the achilles heel of that particular weapon.

So . . . I only buy Pro Mags if they are the only magazines I can find at the time and I desperately need or want additional magazines. I guess I've been lucky so far.

The only really useless magazine I've ever bought was from a company in California that makes mags for long discontinued weapons. I can't remember the name of the company, but at the time I desperately wanted an extra mag for my kid's Winchester 77. They are about as rare as hen's teeth. It took awhile, but the $49 plus shipping mag arrived . . . and it will not feed. PERIOD. Total junk. I did manage to pick up an additional factory mag on gunbroker, but it was not cheap. Cost me nearly $100 with shipping. It works, though.

Thanks for the info guys. I had never heard of Pro Mags before but now I know. This is what gun forums are for.
I won't be buying one. :o

So does anyone else make an extended mag for the shield?

Yes, the 8-rd mag from S&W.

The Shield was designed as a compact, concealable gun. As such, there are some compromises in the sampler size. Putting some extended mag in it kinda defeats the purpose.

Of course, that it comes with.

The purpose is for when it is at home, not for carry.

That is why the 10 round pro mag was interesting.
