Opinions requested- SD40 vs M&P40

Is it possible to "switch" out parts and make the SD40 a competitive shooting gun???

Hey all, time for another noob question. I did a forum search and didn't get the information I was looking for, If my search wasn't specific enough please delete this and steer me in the right direction. I currently shoot a Model 39 and love it, it needs to go back to S&W for some work and I'm looking to move into the 40 s&w caliber. I'm considering both, ultimately the argument will come down to renting both guns at a local range and trying them on for size. Since I am "wrong handed" I do like the fact that the M&P has ambidextrous controls. Does the SD version offer them as well? Are there any other differences beyond cosmetic and price I should be considering?
thanks

Bob

The SD does not offer ambi controls.

The M&P is the premier line in S&W double action service autos and is, therefore, more expensive.

I find the M&P more comfortable, and it certainly has a better trigger pull. The SD trigger is light years ahead of the budget model it replaced, the SW (SIGMA) Series.

If the purpose is just range plinking and "light duty," you will be fine with the SD. If heavy duty, lots of firing and absolute durability and reliability is what you want, pay the extra and get the M&P. I also believe that the M&P carries better. It may not measure much differently in critical dimensions, but the rounding or dehorning in certain places just makes that M&P feel better to me, but that is a subjective thing.

Another consideration is that there are more accessories for the M&P than for the SD.

Yep you're right, they're the same gun. All parts interchange including magazines. Well except for the frame. And the slide. And the trigger group. And the barrel. Yep, same gun.

Have you actually looked at an SD or are you just some 13 year old kid in his mom's basement with a laptop and an internet connection?

NO i'm not a !3 year old w/ mommy's laptop I'm a 47 year old with armorer training and my info came from a S&W rep that I have known for about 5 years He's been with S&W since 1980. The SD is an improved Sigma basicly they learned from there mistakes.

As for any one else if you want a cheaper (lower cost) Smith go for the SD if you want something with more features the M&P is the way to go and if you want someting for competition
the M&P C.O.R.E. is a sweet set up.

SD competitive?

The SD is a decent weapon for the money.

The trigger pull can be improved with the $20 Apex spring kit.

I chose not to use the new striker spring because of one light hit during a range session.

The other two springs help with trigger pull improvement enough to feel good recomending it.

In my opinion the SD has too long a reset for fast followup shots.

People complain about the MP's hard to hear or feel reset.

That does not bother me at all at the IDPA and USPSA
matches I shoot in.

Shoot them both, I think the MP is worth it.

YMMV

When I went to look at both of them I didn't like how the SD felt in my hand. The M&P felt better in my hand but I didn't want to buy a used one. So I ended up getting a XDM 45. I'm happy with that so far. I still want an M&P though, in FDE.

So, I gather from this discussion - If all I want is a HD, plinking, nice, low-cost weapon, I should go with the SD/VE? If I want to buy accessories, competition and resale..I should go with the MP?
Trigger pull seems to be the bigger issue. One isn't more reliable than the other?

You Got it.

Trigger pull seems to be the bigger issue.

Thre is a difference, but IMHO not an "issue".

One isn't more reliable than the other?

No reliability issues with unmodified Sigma, SD, or M&P that I am aware of...

Holster for M&P 40 fit SD40VE?

Hi,

I have an SD40VE with a light and I can't find a holster. Does anyone know if a holster for an M&P40 is close enough to fit? Also, is there another brand that might fit?

Thanx

I've never handled a SD but I have a MP40 and MP40 C. Both were agency trade-ins, the 40C from Brinks and is so marked on the slide. The full size came from Aim Surplus and showed now holster wear, it looked unissued. Aim has the full sized M&P40s at $250, which I think is the bargain of the year if you want a full sized handgun in 40 S&W. That's less than $100 more than a HighPoint 40 S&W.

Smith & Wesson worked with the Cincinnati Police to develop the M&P pistols. Their SWAT officers did not like the Sigma pistols and I don't know the reason.
