Ordered a NIB 327 TRR8, what can I expect?

It will probably be the best DA trigger you ever felt on a Smith. Balance is great even with 357 loads. Now I had the R8 but is basically the same thing. I was told the rifling is different between the R8 and the TRR8. The R8 does not like lead bullets. It leaded up the barrel on mine. I do not know if the TRR8 will have the problem but the rifling in the barrel in the R8 is not your traditional rifling. I think it is called ECM rifling or something like that. Someone who is more knowledgeable than me can chime in. Nice choice by the way! You will be happy with it!!

I find this interesting because my R8 won't shoot anything lead worth a darn. And it's a bear to get the lead from the bore. Even the new coated bullets just scatter across the target but at least they don't leave lead behind. But as soon as I step to plated or jacketed bullets then the gun is a laser beam again.

Have to say I'm not too thrilled by the VZ grip. That's one tiny grip. And mine needed some fitting. It was easy but had I just mounted it and shot it without checking I think I may have sliced my hand open since it was so long on the back edge. I may order one of the newer synthetic grips and try that next.

And a HUGE +1 to the .357 moon clips being frail. I've already killed one of them and yet have never killed a .45 ACP moon clip. And the brass wobbles like mad in the clips. Also, if you have any roll sized cases then they may not fit if they weren't perfectly rolled. The clips seem to be very brand specific. I think it's Remington brass is at least mostly tight while Winchester flops around.

I use mine for ICORE. My hands aren't very big. I found this grip that I like:
Hogue Monogrip Conversion Grips S&W N-Frame Round Butt Rubber Black

I put in a spring kit from Jerry Miculek. I did not feel that mine needed any smoothing of the internals. Trigger pull is now about 7.5 pounds. I only shoot Federal primers.

I bought moon clips from Revolver Supply Co. You need to match the thickness of the clip to your brand of brass. There is no standard for the rebate size so different brands are tighter/looser in the clips.

I get excellent accuracy with cast lead sized to .358.

My new TRR8 is headed back to S&W for correction of a problem of light strike misfires in DA shooting.
Wonder if the fix will be to just swap in a heavy mainspring in place of the Wolff unit it was issued with.

I had that problem and they replaced the firing pin and strain screw.

I had mine for a little over 2 years. It shoots great. my only problem was my little hands. Even with the Hogue grips I was not able to draw and fire as fast as I wanted. I also used Federal small pistol primers.I posted it for sale here for $850 and it sold in a few days :) I never had a misfire problem with mine. I think I have 20 moon clips around here some place. You're going to love it ..

I had one miss fire but figured it was the super cheapo re-loads.
It went bang the next time around. Will keep track & keep an eye on it.
The factory ammo had no issues.
The provided moon clips are flimsy. Will look for something better.
Great! Another excuse to go to the range again this week!
To check for light strike misfires in DA. :o)

I have gone to the range yesterday, shoot my R8 in S/A an D/A with very good results!
Here in France, shooters consider me as a lucky one, seeing the R8... Yes, that is a wonderful revolver!!! For the moment, no misfires...

( and I will even try it next year for in a shooting competition)

Just got back from the range........ Mines going back to S&W for the same light strike issue. Both factory ammo and reloads....
Both single and D/A. Moon clips might help, but there is no excuse for it. Should go bang every time. This trip I probably had 20-30 / 150 rounds. Probably a short firing pin.
Didn't try moon clips, that could just mask the problem.
Rats............

Groo here
The light strike problem is often fixed with a "longer" firing pin.
[ the groove in the pin is wider allowing the pin to go deeper into the primer,]
It maybe wrong but primers seem "harder" then they have in the past.
Also needing seated " harder " then in the past.

My TRR8 is at S&W for light primer strikes. Like others have said awesome trigger, balance and accuracy. I am a 1911 guy but I love this revolver.

There are so many, it seems they need to do a recall on these at no expense to the owners. Cover shipping etc.......

Good to know. With this being so common, you would think they would address it rather than keep sending them out?

I am one of those waiting to acquire one.... I have looked at them in print but not actual. Still think that they are fabulous revolvers. I just haven't yet gotten the gumption up to buy one at/near retail, although it is looking lime I may have to..... I have worried that the light weight may be resulting in a rather unmanageable recoil but that does not seem to bethe case after reading the responses in the posts. Hoping to find a "used" one that someone just can't shoot.....! I'll get one eventually one way or another. This post has confirmed my initial reaction that these are very nice 357s as one would expect from the best revolver manufacturer in the world!

I would buy one again. Its an easy gun to shoot well. Its lighter than other revolvers its size, but its not that light. (35.3 OZ) I doubt folks would sell due to their inability to shoot well as it is over 2 lbs. With the moon clips the light strike issue might not be a problem. But mine went back today and am 100% sure I will be happy with the results. I paid full retail and would do so again. As there is nothing else like it out there. Perfect balance, great D/A trigger, good looks, 8 shots as accurate as you are.
:D

Mine should be back in 3 weeks. They semi shut down in summer from the 7/28 to the 8/8.
Just my luck. LOL LOL

I got mine back yesterday. Did not get to the range yet. They replaced the firing pin and main spring according to the service order. The trigger feels heavier but still very smooth with a consistent pull. I liked the lighter pull better, but what good is that if it doesn't go bang every time.

Got mine picked up after a trip to S&W.
Enclosed a letter detailing 10% misfires with Remington factory loads.
Enclosed was a printed sheet with several selections.
Checked was:

"The enclosed firearm was returned for wear marks that are consistent with regular usage. No repair is necessary."

That's one way to clear their backlog in the shop.
Guess the Performance Center has taken a clue from the Veteran's Administration.

Now, I'll do what I should have done in the first place. Ordered a C&S firing pin.

Post the letter please

I would love to see the full letter you received. PM me if you do not wish to post it here. *** is S&W thinking ?

Scanned it in, hope you can read sideways!
In fairness, I did also inquire about the peening on the frame that these guns experience.

It looks like all they addressed was the normal peening and not the light strikes. I would call back and request another tag to have the real problem corrected.
