When I bought my 6" barrel 617 I really thought it was what I wanted. I have had it for a couple of years and have never really been happy with it. It is way too nose heavy. Looking through the Brownells website I noticed they had 4" barrels for $140. I ordered one today. My local gunsmith will swap them for $50 + tax. To me it will be worth $200 to have the gun I should have bought in the first place. I thought of selling the gun and buying a 4" but didn't want to go through the hassle. Besides, it has the stupid lock (with plug:D). With the money I would loose on the sale and the higher price of a new 4" gun I think I am money ahead.

Is there a market for a 6" 617 barrel?;)

I have to agree with you. I have the 4" 10 shot, and it balances well and is slick handlin'. Mine is plugged also. I got tired of hunting for a used no-lock.

You'll like it in 4", they balance well.
I'm always watching for more model 17 or 617's to adopt, ditto on the transitional I frame guns. I really enjoy the S&W 22 revolvers.

I have both of them the 4'' and the 6'' well I say I have them the wife shoots the 4'' and likes it so that I just sighed over to her.But any way I love my 6" but when I do shoot the 4" it seems that I move easyer and faster.I shoot plates with them. They are both very good guns. What I don't unstand is this hate for the lock on the gun.Heck for the most part you don't even notice its there.

When I see a S&W with a lock, it looks like a beautiful woman with a big pimple on her cheek. DISFIGURING ! !

I've got both 4" and 6" in the 617. The 4" is the better ballanced and faster pointing for sure. I've actually decided to scope the 6" as an excuse to keep it :-)

Now, if they made a 6" with a 1/2 lug, now THAT would be the cats behind!

According to SCSW3, there was a special 617 no-dash with a no-lug/no-shroud barrel that came in both 4" (200 made) and 6" (116 made). There were also 17 four-inch no-lug/no-shroud barrel 10-shot round-butt and 23 four-inch no-lug/no-shroud barrel 10-shot square-butt 617s made in 1998. None reported with a 'half-lug' or ejector rod shroud.

I thought about doing that to my 6" but chickened out.

As far as the lock goes I have a couple of S&W revolvers with the lock. Most people seem to feel that it's just a political eye sore that reminds them of the Clinton gun bans. I agree and also think it ruins the looks of the revolver.

The only time the lock bothers me..... is when I sign on here!! LOL!!!
I have the 4" and 6" 10-shots and love them both. If there was a friendly wager on the line, I'd want my 6".
I suppose if I could only keep one, it would be the 4"... but luckily, that's not a decision I'll have to make anytime soon.
Thumbs up!

That is one sweet looking revolver. I may need a set of those grips and break out the Mother Mag Polish after the barrel is installed:D.

Hey, I'm not too proud to use every trick in the book to entice the GF to go to the range or plink'n w/ me. She thinks its 'purdy'...
and she knows it feels just like the 4" 686 in the bedside chest.
