Oregon expands background checks to private sales

Another moronic law that doesn't take enforcement into account - unless the weapons were entered into a database when originally purchased, how will they be tracked? Voluntary compliance will be very low- Private party transfers will continue at kitchen tables and garages all over Oregon.

The state does their own back ground check using NICS and their own database. The firearm SN, make and model will go into the state police database. They will be tracked. But don't worry, pot will be legal in a few months.

The State along with its equally moronic neighbor Washington just joined Connecticut and New York in turning thousands of normally law abiding citizens into criminals.

Makes perfect sense to me.

Felon#1 selling stolen guns to Felon#2 will both be forced by law to go through an FFL or face criminal charges for an illegal weapons transfer. May the good people of Oregon rest easier knowing this "loophole" has finally been closed.

What else is in that bill?

None of the Washington gun enthusiasts I encounter ever mention the inconvenience or expense of our new requirement to make private transfers through FFLs. It's the portions of I-594 that were never mentioned in its 11 million dollar promotion that will cause real disruptions in our lives when they are enforced.

I found this snippet out of the linked article interesting: “[…] Democrats managed to increase their majorities in both chambers after last year's election, partially because key candidates in the Senate were backed by billionaire Michael Bloomberg's gun control group, Everytown for Gun Safety.” That wonderful citizen added several million to the local tech company billionaires’ millions to raise the amount spent promoting Washington’s I-594 above 11 million.

Until they get all the guns of law abiding citizens registered into their databases, I suspect this is and will continue to be the case. Of course the guns held by the criminals will NEVER end up in their registration databases so their transfers are unaffected.

Enforcement of these laws is all but impossible. Here in WA we are still waiting for the first "sting" to take place - to see this abomination of a law (I-594) taken to court and overturned. Of course no one is volunteering to be the test case, but eventually it will happen...

Those guns you buy new not from oregon can still be passed around without tracking. Same with any guns not already in the database. What about stolen guns? Those are what matter more and im sure the thief sure wont be reporting that.
