Our version of a Vintage Military Handgun Match

We are conducting a Vintage military Handgun Match at our gun club in Mississippi. What is required is a handgun model used by a military organization at lest 50 years ago. The handgun does not hav to be 50 years old or older, it just has to be the model used by the military 50 years ago. We allow any safe ammunition. This allows SAA, Model 10, Luger, 1911, P38 and a host of handguns. The handguns have to be as issued, with no alterations except a trigger job or filing of the sights to zero. Anyone showing up at the range but does not have a handgun that qualifies, will be allowed to shoot but will be put in a seperate cateory.

I figured the Vintage Military Rifle shooters had a match, so why should handgun shooters be left out.

All shooting is done on the US Army "L" Target at 25 yards. All shooting will be done with one hand. We decided on this method because the L target is what was used to train on in WW2 and the Army tarined with one hand.

We shoot the standard 900 Conventional Pistol Course of fire:

Unlimited sighters in 10 minutes
Slow fire event
20 shots in 2 strings of 10 shots in 10 minutes

National Match Course
10 shots slowfire in 10 minutes
10 shots Timedfire in 2 strings of 5 shots in 20 seconds
10 shots Rapidfire in 2 strings of 5 shots in 10 seconds

Timedfire event
20 shots Timedfire in 4 strings of 5 shots in 20 seconds

Rapidfire event
20 shots Rapidfire in 4 strings of 5 shots in 10 seconds

The L target is more generous that he usual targets used in NRA Conventional Pistol. This helps the shooter in the fact that they are not using Match Grade Handguns.

No but the Vaquero in .45 Colt w/ 5.5" and 7.5" barrels would be. In our rules you could shoot your Ruger but your score would go into a special caegory. We never refuse a shooter, the rght to shoot even if their firearm is not legal for the match,

Can I shoot a 1911 with adjustable rear sight? Does my box stock Remington R1 (?) 1911 with fixed rear sight, fiber optic front sight meet your rules?

Would this allow a Browning Hi Power in .40 S&W or would it have to be in the original 9mm caliber to fully qualify?

We are trying to be inclusive in this match. The Remington .45 should be OK and the .40 Browning as well. There would be an advantage to using a .38-.357 mag Vaquero but no advantage to the .40.
