Outstading movie music, not themes

Breakfast at Tiffany's
MOON RIVER
Pink Panther
DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES
Laura
St Louis Blues from WC Handy movie

Every movie and TV score (Peter Gunn and Mr. Lucky, to name a couple) that Henry Mancini did (which was a huge number) was good. As I mentioned earlier, Laura's score was the product of David Raksin, and probably the best recognized of his film works. I think later he became a professor of music at UCLA.

And then there's this one. One of my favorite movies, and scenes. Love the music. Very 80s. It also happens to be one of my ringtones. :o

Fun fact: The music wasn't finished when they filmed this scene, so they walked to Billy Joel's "Uptown Girl" playing on loudspeakers because it had the same tempo.

+1 on Bernard Herrmann. Hitchcock films are just not the same without his work. Case in point: the Psycho shower scene was not supposed to be scored, but Herrmann wrote the cues anyway. After Hitchcock heard the theme (“The Murder”), he added it — and doubled Herrmann’s $34,000 fee. Seriously long read, but a lot of insight at: http://www.bernardherrmann.org/lega..._theme/transformation_of_the_psycho_theme.pdf

True Grit

Carter Burrell’s work for the Coen brothers. “Fargo” and “Miller’s Crossing” stand out for me.

Carter Burwell should have won an Oscar for his soundtrack for True Grit. The Screen Actors Guild idiots disqualified it because it was composed of old Gospel hymns set to rich orchestration. It is one of my favorite soundtracks with old gospel favorites like "Leaning" and "Hold to God's Unchanging Hand", both of which are deeply imbedded in the True Grit geographical setting. Jeff Bridges was denied an Oscar for his electrifying performance of Rooster Cogburn, way more authentic to the Charles Portis novel than John Wayne's, though Wayne's star turn is epic. The same year SAG ignored Burwell and Bridges they gave pedophile Michael Jackson a special tribute at the Academy Awards ceremony, even though Jackson never made a movie. They also ignored and snubbed recently deceased Farrah Fawcett who made a few great movies. I don't watch Hollywood stuff much anymore, save the truly creative independent filmmakers, blissfully free of politics.

Paint Your Wagon comes to mind.

Maybe not in the way the O P has in mind, but anything with Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood singing is quite "outstanding."
