If seller posts this in his ad should a potential buyer shy away? 7 shot L frame .357 revolver. I passed but wonder if it may have been a cheap fix?

Not one I would buy online.
In person, with a serious inspection, maybe.
But that would a require a detour down through Low Ball City.
After all, I am the Dude who bought the 686 with the K Frame Sideplate!

Selling a modern S&W revolver "as-is... gunsmith special" says to me it is either shot so much it will need a trip back to S&W to see if it can be repaired, has been shot with overloaded ammo and now there is a serious problem, or Bubba tried to improve it and now it does not work. Buyer beware!

Revolver with a Bubba slicked up smiffin' job most likely. Pass... unless very cheap and you require a challenge or have masochistic tendencies.

I'm with Pilgrim on this, sounds to me like hands-on only kind of bargaining.

I wonder whether it would be worthwhile to buy such a "Gunsmith Special" and at the same time one of the "parts kits" for the same model? You could keep the barreled action and side plate and replace everything else with " matched" parts. This would be worthwhile only if both purchases were cheap enough and the GS Spl were solid and cosmetically acceptable. HMMMMM…

PASS!!!!! Don't start out with the Albatross already around your neck! spend a bit more and get a gun with no excuses or problems, it will be cheaper in the long run!

Depends on the gun the price, your parts pile, equipment and abilities. Plus any addition information you can get from seller.

I am retired, have a lathe, milling machine and a lot of parts. But, to me there are not many project guns worth $600, $35 and a transfer fee.
