Been lookin' for a new "no lock" 442 in the local shops. Stopped a shop yesterday. No new 442's but one LNIB (with box) 442 with "lock" for $479. $10 over the new MSRP. Mentioned that to the counterman whose response was "That's what the boss has to have for it." Heck, I can buy a new "no lock" at Cabela's for $419. I guess the "boss" really likes that 442 a whole lot.

Want to buy local because I want to look at the gun "up close and personal" before I walk out the door. Have had two recent not-so-good experiences with ordered guns. Luckily I didn't lose any money. It was just a bit of a hassle.

Unfortunately that happens all to frequently, sounds like he didn't want to sell that gun to you! Usually a conversation with "the boss" results in a mutually agreeable sale.

Attitudes cost All cash and carry business millions of dollars every year.
Chances are you will buy elsewhere in the future over what may have been a pocket change price difference. Good gun shops are almost as hard to find as good mechanics.

They are out there,we as consumers need to invest a little bit of our time looking for that shop that feels good when we walk through the door. Buying guns sight unseen has always given me the willies unless it is brand new.

there have been 442s and 642s at the last 2 gunshows i have attended for 349.00 plus tax. s&w must really be providing some incentives. i guess it is painful for dealers who have lots of older stuff still in stock.

Probably old stock that the "boss" picked up when prices were still high. Unfortunately they'll still sell it and rip off some unsuspecting customer.

That was the price around here before they lowered msrp. Now they are $409 locally. $369 if I travel across state. Find a new store.

Just picked up my 642 for 339 plus tax! Granted it was at a gunshow. most of my LGS have them in the range of 419-449.

I'm thinking that from a local dealer ("brick and mortar" shop) about $400-$420 out the door would be right.

Thing that pisses me off is S&W starts this great new sale--apparently to thank dealers like me who already paid $400+ to buy a bunch of their junk, then they go ahead and undercut my prices. Then people like You want to thank me for getting screwed by S&W by badmouthing other dealers with prices that were reasonable two months ago & who got double screwed now-- Thanks a lot, I live for clients like you, as Your type makes it all worthwhile for me.

Small shop I frequent has the same feeling. Does S&W have any idea of what they're doing with their dealer relationships? The "Little Guy" is getting creamed!

My local shop tells his SW rep worked with him on a credit/refund for his stock n hand when the prices dropped. Maybe you need a better rep?

You're welcome.

My local shop cleared out their old stock of J frames with a price decease and big promotion while the rebate last year was still in effect. Whether I bought on the 31st or 1st of the year I would have paid the same price counting the rebate. Very fair way to do it IMO. Maybe you do need a better rep, or a better business strategy.

Thing is, I buy from 15 or more different distributors, and where do I get off treating my valuable & hard to find distributors like ****, just because of a few (I hope) bad clients. I prefer to hold onto the offending products, prices will eventually resume, and I am happier treating my distributors the way I would like to be treated.

Sorry that S&W's reduction in prices is causing problems for dealers, but a savvy consumer most certainly is not going to pay more than new MSRP for a used gun. Do folks pay more than new car MSRP for a slightly used car...same model, same options? (edited)

$419 at a local store down the road from me here in Jax, FL. I would find a new place to haunt. Most pawn shops that sell guns can order you new as well. One might be nice to you.

Just checked--- the dealer with the overpriced 442 is also a Davidson Dealer. A new "no lock" Davidson 642 though this dealer is $412 "out-the-door". Go figure.

I didn't see the part where this thread was about you. Blaming the customer for wanting the best deal? Gee, sorry I can't buy from your store.

This thread is going downhill fast...

I'm certain all of the LGS guys with old stock are complaining mightily to S&W about the new price reductions and I don't blame them. But, it's not the consumers fault nor should the consumer be expected to pay for it.

He's not upset about the customer wanting a deal - he's upset at the customer calling him a ripoff.
By all means, get the best deal but don't curse a man if he can't meet the price of the Big Box. :(
