+P in 6906 ?

tc, I have the similar compact 3913, I routinely use +P ammo in my gun, and have tested for reliability, and chronographed, factory +P+. I can't say if you "should", but I have experienced no issues at all using +P in mine.

+p ammo

I checked the "metal frame centerfire pistols" manual on the S&W web site. It advised the +P pressures would be above standard pressure levels and would accelerate wear and make the gun "require more frequent service." The manual specifically prohibited +P+ ammo, as it generates pressures "that can exceed proof-test levels".
The higher pressure loads would certainly be harder (more destructive) on the alloy frame guns.

As I understood it the 3rd Gen frames were originally designed to handle the 356 TSW round. That round us usually considered to be a little hotter or as hot as a +P round, depending on who's doing the loading.

I have carried a 6906 for 20 years. Currently there are 12 of either of these in it. In a 3 1/2" barrel, they're going less than 1K fps. I'm sure if you bump that up a hundred fps they'd be more effective. But will my follow up shots be? This is quite the handful, for me the best compromise of capacity, effectiveness, concealability, safety, and operation. I'm voting against +P partially because I can't replace the gun. Joe

I wouldn't have much concern with +P ammo in a 6906, although I would install a new stock weight recoil spring if I wasn't sure of the age or use on my current one. The problem with +P+ is there are no standards on pressure, while some may be fine others may not be good for it. Either way the higher the pressure the more the wear. The 356tsw was hotter than all 9x19 rounds, it will work in alloy frame guns but it was only chambered in steel framed guns.

I carried and shot +P and even +P+ ammo through my 6946 with no problem, and several of my friends routinely use +P in their 6900-series guns. No sweat.

Thanks for all the input guys. I am taking all the info and decided that it will handle +P, although I would sacrifice longevity.
Thanks for the replies, TC
