Retired a couple of years ago. Retiring officers are required to turn in their firearm for reissue. Gave my Sig P220 one final cleaning / lube and turned it in when I left.
Department policy is that duty side arms are replaced every ten years with whatever new offering is decided upon by the firearms committee. Officers have always been given the opportunity to purchase their outgoing duty pistol for personal ownership.
2021 was the anniversary date for the replacement. I have stayed "certified" as a Special and thus still connected. When I heard about the turn in I contacted the powers and inquired on getting my "retirement" gun back. A couple of phone calls up the chain and the "big guy" gave the thumbs up. My gun was tracked down.
I paid the fee and waited. The guns slated for officer purchase were sent back to the distributor and then ultimately transferred to a local FFL for the final sale.
When I turned in the P220, it was in very good condition. Not so much as a smiley on the barrel. Got notification and went to the FFL a couple of months ago. When I got my hands on the Sig I was dumbstruck. It had been rode hard and put away wet. Grip screws looked like they had been tightened with a rock. All buggered up. Beyond a smiley on the barrel. It was stripped white half way down from firing dry. No major damage but it hadn't been loved and was badly in need of some attention.
Oh well. Time for a refurbish, anyhow. Off to Sig Sauer. Sig claims one month for any work involving refinish. The gun came back yesterday, one month to the day. Bag of old parts included. Gun sonic cleaned. All internal parts replaced. Refinished the slide, installed new night sights and reblue of the barrel.
I'm glad to have my old friend back.
Merry Christmas to All.
