Pachmayr vs Hogue Rubber Revolver Grips

This is just a narrow poll for revolver rubber grips only from Pachmayr vs Hogue. Now there are several types like round butt, square butt, recoil tammer type, and exposed back strap so you can express your preferences and why if you wish. Pics of your guns with grips are much appreciated!

The Pachmayr SK-G gripper has long been my choice but I found a rubber revolver grip that I like even a little better and that is the Uncle Mike's grip. The Uncle Mike's is now out of production.

There is one problem with this style of Pachmayr and this problem is MUCH more prevalent on these newer Pachmayr products marketed by Lyman. The problem is that the grips that are one piece in the back and slip open in the front of the grip for install simply won't close all the way up front, I find this most on the N-frame Pachmayr gripper. The little gap up front is annoying to my shooting hands and almost begs for a shot of superglue (which I obviously wouldn't do.)

I completely understand that some folks -HATE- the look of a gushy black Pachmayr on a classic Smith & Wesson revolver, I understand and respect that opinion. At the same time, that is exactly how I feel about the Hogue rubber grip on a revolver. I think it is simply horrid looking, just awful, really REALLY awful.

The only S&W revolver I own that wears the Hogue rubber grip is my 460XVR and it will stay on there as it's a special recoil reducing grip that I deem necessary. I wish there was a Pachmayr equal of it.

My Smiths wear Hogues. My Ruger SBH wears Pachmayrs.

I actually don't use any kind of goodyears on my carry guns. But HDWs and belt guns are different and I like whatever it is that S&W uses.

Well, I guess I still consider this a carry gun but I haven't carried it in a very long time:

But that's it, that's all the guns I own with rubber stocks. Everything else is wood, bone/antler/stag, or polymer.

There was a time when swapping out the factory S&W wood grips for businesslike Pachs was the first thing many of us did. They worked, too. I always thought Pachmayer Presentations (on full-sized revolvers), and Compacs (on my snub Combat Magnum), looked better. I found that Grippers worked well for DA shooting, but not so well for one-hand SA manipulation in my hands.

Edit to add: I've only handled, but not shot, the current S&W rubber grips shown above. They fit me just fine.

My hard kicking .44Ms wore Pachmayrs and they were also used on my carry revolvers of that era.

I used to be a Pachmayr-only guy, but that changed a few years ago when Pachmayr was acquired by Lyman. The quality went into the toilet, with fit to the gun really suffering. Now all I buy are Hogue rubbers, when I need them. (That didn't come out quite right. )

My 629-6 5" full lug has rubber hogue finger groove handles. Fits me perfectly.

I have both Pachmayr and Hogue grips for my Apex Tactical Specialties S&W 625-8 JM .45 ACP. The Hogue 19022 Monogrip round grip with full back strap coverage feels the best and fits in my hand better as compared to the Pachmayr Diamond Pro Series Grips I have however the Pachmayr's really make the revolver tuck tight up to my side but are harder for me to get a good fast full handhold on due to the size of my hands. I can see why some would prefer one over the other depending on hand size alone. I like the feel of the rubber on both. If the Pachmayr Diamond Pro Series Grip was just a little longer it would be a winner in my book but is just a little to short for my hand size but could fit someone else perfectly. My little finger keeps wanting to come off the bottom of the Pachmayr Diamond Pro Series Grip but otherwise I love the feel of it. The palm swell and form of the grip fits my hand great. That is why I say if it was just a "little longer" I would be in love with it and a winner in my book but then nothing mass produced fits everyone perfect. I could not find long sleeve shirts until they came out with "Big and Tall" stores with the "ape hangers" I have. At age 15 I was 6'5" and 200lbs.


Note: Pachmayr is being "trashed" in reviews on Amazon over quality control issues concerning their rubber grips.

All depends on how they feel for me. My Hogues gripped guns outweigh the Pachmayr gripped guns but I go with what feels best for each particular gun.

I prefer the Hogues on "K" frame and larger. And Pachmayrs for "J" frame size revolvers.

I never have liked Hogue rubber grips. They just don't feel right and don't fit my hands at all. That's both revolver and semi-auto.
While I do have several sets of Hogue wood on semi-autos, I absolutely hate their wood revolver grips for the same previously mentioned reasons.
I do pretty much like Pachmayr Signature grips and have a couple of guns with those on them. However, I find the Gripper style to be the worst grip I've ever tried to use. Can't stand the things.
My favorite rubber grips are the old Uncle Mike's/Butler Creek grips. And its not because they're rubber. The shape just fits my hand perfectly. Its my favorite grip for defensive revolvers. Sadly, they aren't made anymore and haven't been for quite some time. However, if you're patient and willing to spend some time searching, they can still be found.

A real favorite for me is the Cops favorite, the Gripper Pro. They fit my hand perfectly and don't shift during rapid fire. Unfortunately they still aren't available for Round Butt grip frames so my fallback for these frame is the Hogue made 500 Magnum grips.

Pachs are ok, but I prefer sticky Hogues on my 642 and 686+. The rest of my S&Ws wear magnas and Tyler T's, just cuz old school is kool..

Me too. Pachmayr Grippers make me far more accurate than any other grip, wood or rubber.

I have Pachmayr Presentations on everything. Signatures on the 1911s. The quality on the current production has been a problem, but fortunately lots of "old new stock" are available on eBay at reasonable prices.

Never cared for the Hougues, but to be fair they are really just different. For one I don't care for finger grooves. The Hougues are tall and thin with an exposed backstrap and finger grooves. It's comparing apples and oranges.

Yes! I have several; DA work is more comfortable with the small Presentation stocks.

The Hogue Model 19022 Monogrip for S&W N Frame models has full backstrap coverage so the backstrap is covered or I would not be using it. My revolver came with the uncovered backstrap Hogue grip (see bottom pic) so the first thing I did was order the full coverage model (see top pic) FOR SURE! There is a world of difference in the feel in the hand as well as recoil control for me; allowing me to grip the revolver as high on the grip as possible comfortably in recoil with 230gr. +P .45 ACP Federal HST loads. It is my personal preference for now.

Just because it works for me does not mean it will work for you however because our hands, the slight differences in the way we grip our guns and even our shooting styles vary. You have to find what works the BEST for YOU personally.

The top pic below shows the back full coverage of the Hogue Model 19022 Monogrip grip as compared to the second pic on bottom with the Hogue Model 25000 Monogrip grip for Smith & Wesson N Frame with the exposed backstrap.

I have Pachmayr Grippers on my Rugers and I've got Pach Compacs on my 3" 686+. Never warmed up to Hogue rubbers. Everything else is wood.

Voted Pachmayr only because I've had them on a few of my large caliber revolvers for several years. That said, Hogue Grip Sleeves work quite well on my M&P's.

Pachmayr Presentation are my preference for revolvers and 1911 pistols. Until reading this thread was not aware of fitting issues or that Lyman had bought Pachmayr. Guess I'll be looking for the older Pachmayr grips for my K/L and N frame revolvers. Sincerely. bruce.

My experience with Pachmayr is limited to a .41 Mag Blackhawk. I found they were hard on my hand and put the wood grips back on. My 4566 had the Hogue rubber grip and I did not shoot it well until I installed the factory straight grip that fit me better. I have had any desire for either since.

I just could never got past how ugly Pachmayr grips are! I do have a set of Hogue Grips on my Redhawk and my S&W PC 629 for shooting only! When the shooting is over and the cleaning is done the wood grips go back on!

I have always preferred the fit , hand feel and looks of Pachmayr's .
But here we are just getting into the Ford Vs Chevy thing ...
They will both haul your stuff down the street ... the Chevy just looks better !

Hogues don't drag on clothing like Pacs when carrying a revolver.
