Im going to tackle painting my mp15-22. With some inside help from forum member gotfish, im going to document the whole process with pics and step by step instructions for future memebers to get some sort of idea where to start if they wanted to do the same.

I just started my Duracoat Project yesterday...Maybe I should have waited :( .

So to start, make sure the rifle is safe. Remove the mag, clear the chamber, make visual that the weapon is clear. Then the fun begins. Anything you dont want painted has to come off. For example: the trigger assembly, the safety, the mag catch and button, and anything else you dont want painted. Im not going to go into detail for every step on how to remove the items. Youtube was my friend during the process. The best video was a wheaton arms slidefire video that showed how to remove just about everything on the gun. Heres a few pics of my disassembly. With a before assembled gun.

No need to disassemble your gun. Painters tape under the dust cover close the cover. Stuff the end of your barrel more painters tape, or just use a plastic barrel cover. Spray paint first coat. Let it dry. Throw some kinda of material to make a pattern. I used grass spray paint 2nd coat remove pattern making material let dry. Repeat for 3rd coat. When you are done. You are good to go.

Taping off the safety switch and then getting the paint behind it woulda been a pain. And then I wanted all the pins for the trigger to look clean so thats why I took them all out.

I disassembled my rifle. I wouldn't re-paint my vehicle with the doors and the hood closed, it just wouldn't look as clean. Same goes for the rifle.

Gotfish used rustolium on his build and it looks awesome. Its held up great so far for him. Im still up in the air for color combination. Ive got fde so something that goes nicely with it. Im thinking some sort of tan kinda like he did. Opinions are greatly appreciated

I used Rustoleum on my rifle as well. No real regrets, but I expected some scratches and character marks as a result of my choice of paint. I had no durability illusions going into the project, If I had then I'd have used Duracoat.

Here's a picture of my rifle with Khaki painted items. They also make a Sand color that appears identical from the cap of the can, but I'm sure it is a shade darker or lighter.

Just a word of advice, make sure you let the paint cure for a couple of days (5 to 7 in my opinion) before reassembling. You'll be much more satisfied with the results and the durability of the paint coat will be greatly enhanced.

Yes I plan on taking my time with coats and assembly. Right now im soaking the lower in warm water and dawn to degrease.

my hunting guns get the 'sponge paint' method and turn out great. base coat, then a paper plate sprayed with next coat until you get a puddle, then dip sea sponge in and dab it all over, same next color, next, etc. let dry for 5 days like above post said, then i hit with matte clear coat. i don't take it apart either, just plug the holes.

the sponge paint give more control over where you want the paint if you are going for a random pattern and not a solid like above.

krylon and rustoleum can take some serious abuse if matte clear is over the top.

This off subject but I painted my pf9 yesterday while waiting on prep for my mp1522. All theres left is to go over it with a clear coat. Still waiting to fab up a barrel nut wrench to take my barrel off the 22. The lower is degreased and ready for ap and paint. I might just tape it up to save time since theres no little tedious pieces to tape.

If you're wanting to leave your barrel unpainted, then the easiest thing to do is take a cardboard tube, split it so you can make the diameter a little smaller, then just insert it under the quad rail. Tape off the end of the barrel so the tube won't move around and all you paint is the quad rail. If that's what you're wanting to do, otherwise forget what I just said. :D

You can also take cotton balls and pull material through from the inside towards the outside in order to plug pin and selector holes in the lower receiver. Looks funny, but the paint coats well around the outside and leaves little residue on the surface of the hole where the pins and selector will ride. This just keeps you from having to either clean out the paint from the holes, or deal with possible sticky residue galling on your pins or selector.

The air dry Cerakote is so much better and really easy to use, and at 40 bucks a bottle, it goes a LONG way.

I was wanting to soak my upper in dawn for a hour or so to degrease. Thats the reasoning for wanting to take it off.

Im still up in the air about color. I was going to do a two tone with the moe fde and a lighter tan. But then I started thinking about maybe a light bluish grey and dark grey stock and handle. Want something different

i've painted so many guns i've lost count and have never degreased them with anything but brake cleaner then blast it with the air compressor to get out any leftover carrier from the cleaner, wipe with dry rag and paint.
you are kinda getting carried away if you doing all that prep work for a rattle can paint job.
like the above poster said about the cardboard tube, i happened to have a length of pvc pipe that fit the barrel perfect and covered it that way, don't have any cardboard tubes until christmas present wrapping time!
anyway, here is one i did recently:

and a Bushmaster Predator S&B scope first time i painted it, it has morphed since then

morphed with snake skin finish:
