Paint Project

i've painted so many guns i've lost count and have never degreased them with anything but brake cleaner then blast it with the air compressor to get out any leftover carrier from the cleaner, wipe with dry rag and paint.
you are kinda getting carried away if you doing all that prep work for a rattle can paint job.

Nice work on these. With respect though, maybe the op doesn't want the entire rifle to look painted like yours do. I think he's going more for the look that the rifle was painted / coated before assembly, more for a specific overall appearance than a sort of camo look like yours have. In any case, there's no harm in spending more time in the prep stage. There's nothing wrong with taking time, doing a thorough job, and learning a little about your rifle in the process.

I've usually only wiped mine down with rubbing alcohol or something similar prior to painting. But time spent cleaning before painting is time well spent. Plus, having a barrel wrench of some kind on hand will be helpful many times in the future for checking the tightness of the barrel nut periodically.

Ok, ive got her apart. Yea im not going for the camo look. Like he said im going for the manufactured from the factory look. Here's a couple pics hanging hittin with the ap and first coats of paint.

Couple better shots of the lower. Gonna let it cure for about 5 days and then give it a once over with a clear matte a few times.

I got a little bubbling on the first couple coats with the upper but nothing major. One spot, rail covers will hide.

yeah i realize full camo isn't for everyone, was just showing some work. your's looks good!
i always followed the 5-7 day cure rule after every final coat, so after you are done painting...5-7 days before clear then 5-7 before putting back together.

please ENSURE that you use the same brand of clear as the paint!!!!
i have found that i have done a whole gun that looked excellent and then did not wait the cure rule and hit it with a different brand of clear and the paint bubbled and cracked after all that work.

that's why i wait.

10-4, thanks for the heads up. Ive got both rustoleum paint and clear

Well...It was a good thing that I decided to tear down my rifle to paint. The upper receive has a small crack in the barrel bushing housing. The unfortunate part is I didn't notice it until I started to put the barrel nut back on to put the hand-guard back on the rifle, while my barrel WAS clamped into a vice with the barrel vice clamps, The damn barrel turned and was pushed into the receiver. I have owned this rifle since January 2008, I bought it brand new and I have never dropped it. Today is a sad day in my household.

Bummer ...

Send it to S&W, it's a warranty repair.

Already started the process but I will call on Monday. I'm not mad, I'm just really sad. In the words of Forrest Gump, that rifle was my best good friend.

Hit everything with a couple coats of clear last night afting letting it cure. In the mean time I put my pf9 back together that I started before my mp. I slipped knockin the back pin in and took a chunk paint off.

What kind of clear did you use? I was looking at one called "Clear Gloss" and decided not to get it until I asked.

You want to use a clear coat made by the same manufacturer of the paint you use. Same deal for primer. You don't want to mix manufacturers.

Looks fantastic !!! Now we have to do something about that cantilever mount on the Walther red dot .. LOL. I reversed mine and remounted it and the mount sits on the receiver and is not subject to the handguard flexing which really frustrating me until I figured out why is was zeroed off hand, and off when shooting rested ... :)

Thanks, yeah I assembled everyrthing and wanted to do a photo shoot. I still have to install the barrel nut, barrel, and rail.
