I was blown away. Absolutely the BEST remake of a movie I've ever seen. What ever is in 2nd place isn't even close.
A great performance by the 2 main characters. If I had not seen the original I'd have thought it a perfect film.

BUT:

Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman are two of the best actors in the history of acting. And the both gave the best performances of their respective careers in the original version and the chemistry they shared was as good as it gets. It would just not be possible for anyone to beat this.

But both of the leads in this new version were excellent and Charlie Hunnam even resembled McQueen physically in some scenes. And his performance was top notch.

I think everyone should see this new version. If you saw the original you won't be disappointed. It tells a powerful story and it tells it well. If you missed the original then you dang sure need to see it.

I really like the original. The casting, cinematography, wardrobe and acting were all superb.

I am open-minded enough to always give a re-tell a fair shake but I am more so now with your recommendation.

Gracias.

Miss Pam and lots of other people don't care for that move. It's a lot to gritty and depressing and it vividly depicts a very brutal time and place. Pretty heavy sledding for sure.

But I can't imagine that anyone that like the original not liking this one. It is only very slightly diminished with out McQueen and Hoffman.

Literary historians have pretty much agreed that these are the basic plotlines:

1:Overcoming the Monster
2:Rags to Riches
3:The Quest
4:Voyage and Return
5:Comedy
6:Tragedy
7:Rebirth

If attempts to readapt a tale are frowned upon then "The Magnificent Seven" should have never been made after "The Seven Samurai".

Which category into does "Boy meets Girl" fall?
No problem here with remakes, no sense in pre ordained limits.
Imagine the musical graveyard that would exist if Elvis, Eric and countless others hadn't covered some old songs.
Hope I get the chance to see the revised Papillion.

Just another opinion, but I don't think it would take much for the new version to be better than the Steve McQueen / Dustin Hoffman version. I saw it when it was originally released in the early '70s; certainly neither actor's best effort and we all know those two were in lots of good movies.

I saw "We're No Angels" with Bogart and Ustinov in the 60's and I thought Devils Island was all fun and games. I saw Papillon when it came out to theaters originally. Pretty depressing. I rented it on VHS in the 80's and it was still pretty depressing. We need more fun and happy prison movies.

i first saw the original at a drive in movie theater with my then girlfriend who had season tickets that were given to her by her parents. we both lived at home so we used the drive in as a place to get frisky but we were both so enthralled by the movie that we ended up being celibate that night.
i couldn't give the original a better testimonial than that. i've seen it several times since and it's one of my all time favorite movies!
