In made a visit to my LGS yesterday and found a 64-3 with 3" barrel, bobbed hammer, and original Tyler T-grip.

The price is good and it's in great shape.

I was about to buy it. But I overlooked the fact that due to recently moving, my carry permit and license show different address. Hence I couldn't take it out of the store. I took it as a sign that it just wasn't meant to be, shrugged my shoulders, and left. I've got more guns than I can shoot anyway. Whew! I saved myself some money!

This morning I went to the sheriff's office and got my permit updated.

Guess what? Now I'm thinking about that gun. I don't own any 3-inch k-frames. Let alone any with the other features. It seems like it fills a niche in my collection.

What do you all think? How highly prized is a specimen like this?

If you have the $$ and it is for a fair price... yea. I have a 3" 64 .38. Has TCP stamped on it.

Nice gun and if I want it would be fine for CCW or even hiking in the woods.

You can always do a Lay-A-Way like I am doing on the S&W 65 3" I found at a pawn shop recently!!!

I have its equiv in a NY-1 overrun that was officer owned. It has the factory bobbed hammer. If it's a good price, you won't get hurt. Tyler's are going for quite a bit on eBay, especially the early ones.

As for the address thing, I got rejected on a BG check a few years ago. I moved about 10 miles from VA to TN. Thought everything was in order. Somehow they showed me having a DL in both states at once. Had to go 'renounce' my VA residency at the DMV. :-)

38 Specialist, if you've never experienced shooting a 3" S&W revolver, I highly recommend you buy that 64 and give it a try...I promise you won't regret it. :)

Hopefully you’ll get it if you want it. But wondering what state/jurisdiction you live in that requires a carry permit to purchase a handgun? Or maybe I’m missing something. Just curious-
Best

Some states allow "take it now" if the buyer has a CCW. FL comes to mind. So perhaps "instant gratification" was at play. I tend to buy C&R because I can take it straight away, not so much on the modern stuff.

In Minnesota, you need a permit to buy a handgun. A carry permit also served this purpose. I had my permit in my wallet.... But it was discrepant with my ID.

I've got two, plus a 65 and two 10's. Depends on the price. Anything under $600 would be a buy it. Over would be a maybe. The T-grip is worth $100 by itself.

Best carry gun Smith ever made.

I BOUGHT THE GUN!

This is the original poster here. I BOUGHT THE GUN!

I just got done shooting 50 rounds through the range. It works flawlessly it feels great!

Thanks for all you guys that enabled me.

Have a look at some pics. Does anything stand out that's interesting and unique about the gun?

I wouldn't have bought it, but that is because I already have 5 3" 65's and a bobbed hammer 3" 64. Seriously, I love them and I bet you will too. The balance is perfect.
If you remove the grips and find TPD electro-penciled on the frame, it will most likely be an old Tampa PD gun.
Honestly I don't have any need for more, but maybe if I found a 3" 13 at a good price....

When I see a vintage Smith & Wesson I put it on Lay-A-Way. Come back and get it later. Hope it’s there when you go back to store. Good Luck!
