The only solution is involvement in the school systems, watching what is going on with the curriculum, and calling out the teachers, TAs, and administrators when this foolishness happens. The other option is to take the kids out of school and homeschool them. Homeschooling results in a better education anyway, judging by SAT scores.
As previous posters have said, it is a case of not wanting to make certain groups upset or deny them...whatever. It is all about being afraid to stand up and say enough. There is so much CYA not only in public schools but just look at the testimony taking place in Congress today regarding the ambassador's and others murder.

PENCILS?! The kids actualy had pencils? OMG how backwards can a school be? Was there a power surge and all the 'puters crashed?
When I was in that grade a real popular TV show was Zorro. Guess you can figure what we used our pencils for. I still have a blue dot . (lucky we didn't go to prison)

Had to laugh at this one. I have a blue dot on my left thumb from a fifth grade pencil "sword fight"....
