Here in South Louisiana there are lots of them in the marsh. Fishermen and hunters usually apply Skin So Soft, or wrap a couple of Bounty dryer sheets in their collar. Both supposed to keep them at bay nothing works 100% in my experience.

We're in NC and my wife and I were talking about this the other day:
We typically like to sit outside at night for a cocktail or cup of coffee before bed, but this year, the heat has been so opressive and unrelenting, we haven't done it all summer long. With this, we have no idea whether there is a gnat problem, mosquito problem, etc.
When the gnats get bad around here, I know there is a dead animal around close by. The last time we had enough gnats to be a problem, there was a dead possum in a neighbors yard. Got rid of it and the gnats left also. Been seeing a few in the house for a week or so. I have looked for a deceased animal but so far have not found it Bug spray does not seem to help either.
For knats in the house you can take some apple cider vinegar put it in a shallow pan and put a drop of dish detergent in it to break the surface tension. You can use a couple around the house to try to track down the source. Knats are blood suckers. They'll bother you and your animals.
For mosquitoes this can't be beat. Worth it's weight in gold and they make one for the back deck (looks like a small lantern). Works best in no-wind conditions. For gnats, when they just pester you by getting in your eyes and nose, a cheap head net seems to work well,
roger on the skin so soft, will try, but will keep a low profile, don't want the bike bros to know, they would wonder why i was having problems on untwisting a bud cap...........
Irishjig, the Skin-So-Soft is also very popular here along MS Gulf Coast. Works pretty good on gnats. Not so much on mosquitos though. It does, however, smell a little girlie.
Putting a few dabs of Absorbine Jr, on the underside of the bill of your cap works good for me. Deet won't do a thing for gnats - works good for mosquitos though. Abosorbine Jr. won't help keep skeeters away so you need to use both products if skeeters and gnats are a problem.
I use those OFF Clip-ons that are battery-powered. I tried them out at several softball games where the gnats were thick and eating everyone. They work great and last a long time.
