Peter Gunn's Gun?

Peter Gunn is one of the first "adult" detective shows without fake heroics and depended on story writing and acting. While it might seem archaic and formulaic today it was a groundbreaker for its time. Its theme song still stands as one of the best...alongside Rawhide, Hawaii Five-0 and maybe a few others.

M Squad with Lee Marvin was another good one as was The Untouchables...at least for the first season or two.

I rember M Squad and also The Detectives (?) with Robert Taylor. Neither compared with The Untouchables which survived into modern day far better than many such shows. Little of it had any historical accuracy (a big deal to some who can't enjoy a story as a story) but the episodes were good ones and the incredible list of guest stars was among the best.

PETER GUNN THEME 1958 - 1961 - YouTube

Someone needed to post the theme song. Many here haven't heard it. Note the gun on the record alblum. I really do feel it was a Chief's Special.

I couldn't connect to YouTube here.

I have the album too. I knew of the original show when I was a boy and bought the album when I found it at a rummage sale.

I stumbled across this band playing the Peter Gunn theme. They sound pretty good.

In season 1, episode 1, he had a Detective Special. He pointed it at a guys back and cocked it, clockwise. In the still below, it's five shot S&W Chiefs Spl.

I remember the Peter Gunn series quite well. My step son asked me " What is Peter Gunn's fathers name?" Told him I didn't know. He said " Pop Gunn".

Could have been Tommy Gunn.

I was 10 when PG first aired. Loved the show, the music and the cars. In the 1969 series Peter drove a New Plymouth Sport Fury which was a very cool car. My dad bought a new one in 69 and I thought it was the most beautiful car I'd ever seen. That thing was a block long or at least it seemed that long.

I really like Mike Hammer and Mr Lucky as well.

Edit: And let's not forget Joe Friday in Dragnet.

Proving every thread ever published here becomes immortal.

When I was in high school during that era, one of my courses, I think it was civics related, was taught by the football coach. He loved Peter Gunn. Every morning after the night that an episode was broadcast, he would fill the class period with a class postmortem discussion, so most of the students watched it. It was fairly interesting. Lola Albright was fairly hot stuff for high school boys of that time.

Lots of memories. These shows cemented my later career choice. Never dreamed that would happen. 77 Sunset Strip led to Surfside Six. I even had a Mattel(?) snubnose which carried metal cartridges which shot a spring loaded plastic bullet.

Yes, it would have been a Mattel snubnose 38. I too had one, with a plastic shoulder holster that I got for Christmas. I remember I wore it one time, trick or treating when my buddy and I wore slacks, coats and ties and went as detectives.

I was six or eight when Peter Gunn was on. I don't remember the show at all, but I remember being afraid of "Peter Gunn" for some reason. Absolutely no idea why that would have been but it's a firm memory. My mother probably told me to behave or Peter Gunn would get me or something like that.

Yes, her name was Edie on the show. Pete had to compete with all the horse operas. My dad would also watch (Super Circus) with me on Sunday A.M.. Super Circus was a local live kids show that featured Mary Hartline, a super looking blonde that marched around in a red cheer leader suit. She had her own guns.

Jcmack, was she packin' 38's or 44's?? Those would REALLY get my attention !!!

Ahh sweet memories of Peter Gunn, Adventures In Paradise, and Route 66. Gardner Mc'Kay starred in Adventures in Paradise I know. Poor Martin Milner who passed not too far back from Route 66. Watched these shows on a 21 inch B&W Philco.
